Dirt Dawgs Week in Review

June 24, 2013 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Wachusett Dirt Dawgs News Release

Things have certainly been on the upswing for the Dirt Dawgs after a turbulent start to the season. Coming into this week at an unsatisfactory 1-6, the Dawgs got a much needed stretch of days off because of local storms. Three games were postponed in total, including one Monday and two Tuesday evening.

The rest proved to be exactly what was needed as the week began with a 9-3 victory over the Raging Tide on Thursday night in Old Orchard Beach. The Dawgs were lifted by plating 4 runs in both the 6th and 9th innings. John Jennings led the offensive threat, as he got on base three times in the game. He doubled in the third inning and singled in the ninth inning. Michael Marshall picked up the win after pitching six innings and allowing one earned run on four hits and four walks while striking out three.

Friday afternoon proved to provide the same result, as Wachusett took down the Titans of Torrington by a score of 12-3. The scoring proved to be early and often, as Tyler McVicar had 4 hits and 4 RBI's, including two home runs to carry the Dirt Dawgs in front of the home crowd at Doyle Field in Leominster. Jamill Moquete also added 3 hits (1 HR) and 4 RBI's in the win. Nick Filloramo improved to 2-0 on the year by picking up the win for the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs. He allowed two runs over six innings. He struck out five, walked two and surrendered six hits.

Saturday proved to reverse the short lived fortunes of the Dirt Dawgs, as they dropped a tight 9-8 ballgame to the visiting Brockton Rox. In the back and forth bout that encompassed 21 hits, a 7th inning lapse proved to be the final blow in downing the Dawgs. Tyler Mikrut and Josh Raymond led the offensive attack, combining for 4 hits, 3 runs, and 4 RBI's. Dalton Keck (0-2) took the loss for Wachusett. He lasted just 3 1/3 innings, walked one, struck out five, and allowed four earned runs.

The Torrington Titans prevailed over the Dirt Dawgs at Fussenich Park 8-7 on Sunday evening after 10 hard fought innings. Wachusett was led by a flawless day at the dish by Tyler McVicar, who went 4-4 including a double, 2 runs, and 2 RBI's. Michael Yerina ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with his first loss of the year. He hurled the final two innings, walked one, struck out one, and allowed one run.
