Dirt Dawgs Explode for 18 Hits, Four HRs

LEOMINSTER, Mass. (Friday, July 5, 2013) All season long, the pitching has been there for the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs, but the bats haven't always shown up.

Tonight, the Dirt Dawgs bats were on fire as they exploded for 18 hits and 4 homeruns in a 9-2 rout of the North Shore Navigators.

The offensive onslaught started in the first as Tyler McVicar (Elon) doubled home Jamill Moquete (UMass Boston) for the first run of the night. McVicar struck again in the third with a two-run homer to bring the Dawgs' lead to 3-0.

McVicar was the offensive star for Wachusett (7-13) going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

North Shore (11-9) was able to cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth when Devin Carter (Pepperdine) took Kyle Zaorski's (IUP) hanging curve ball to deep left field for a solo homerun. Zaorski earned the win on the night, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing only one earned run on two hits while striking out six.

The Dirt Dawgs opened up the game in the seventh, scoring four runs to take a commanding 8-2 lead. Austin Sistrunk (Lipscomb) started off the frame with a solo shot to left, as McVicar, Derek Lowe (William & Mary), and Joe Coyne (St. Joesph's) each had an RBI in the inning.

Sistrunk then started off the eighth with another solo shot to left, his second, hiking the Dirt Dawgs' lead to 9-2.

David Montiverdi (Dowling College) pitched a strong 2.1 innings in relief for Wachusett, allowing no runs, on three hits while walking two.

Dirt Dawgs' right fielder Moquete also had an excellent night at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

The Dirt Dawgs return to action Sunday when the Martha's Vineyard Sharks visit Doyle Field. First pitch is slated for 4:35 PM.
