Suns Overcome Big Deficit to Defeat Raging Tide
July 5, 2013 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Pittsfield Suns News Release
There are not many games in which a team can win while committing six errors, but the Suns (10-11) found a way. The Suns were able to work around the errors to fight back in dramatic fashion to defeat the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide (10-12) by a score of 12-8. Four Suns players drove in two or more runs, led by Ryan Olmo (URI) who hit a three-run home run to put the finishing touches on a four run ninth inning and a Suns victory.
The Suns started hot by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning after a Bo Slemons (Xavier) two-RBI double that put the Suns up 3-2. A combination of walks and errors though led to another big inning for the opposition. The Raging Tide scored five runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-3 lead. During that long inning an obviously frustrated head coach Tom Conley was ejected from the game for arguing balls and strikes. Conley's ejection though, seemed to inject some energy into the team.
The Suns offense came to life in the sixth inning, scoring three runs and narrowing the margin to 8-6. Back to back RBI singles from Brendan Slattery and Brenden Geary (University of Maine)did the main damage against Raging Tide starter Enrique Sosa (University of Miami). The offensive rally continued in the seventh with another RBI for Geary and a game tyingRBI single from John Kinne (Columbia University).
The offensive rallies were being supported by a superb relief pitching performance by Mike Geannelis (UMass-Amherst). Geannelis came in for starter Harrison Paige in the sixth inning and pitched the remainder of the game, striking out six while only allowing three men to reach base.
Morgan Phillips (College of Charleston) entered into the game as a pinch hitter to lead off the bottom of the eighth and promptly hit a scorching double to the right-center field gap. Then, after Frank Crinella (Merrimack College) reached on an error and Steve Dill (Harvard) singled home Phillips to give the Suns the lead. Ryan Olmo came up two batters later and made sure the Suns would win the game comfortably; crushing a long three-run home run to give the Suns a 12-8 lead.
The Suns go on the road to face the Brockton Rox tomorrow night.
The Suns return to Wahconah Park Tuesday, July 9th against Brockton as well.
