Amarillo Dillas News Release
SAN ANGELO, TX - The Amarillo Dillas powered their way to their second straight United League Baseball Championship with a 7-3 over the San Angelo Colts on Tuesday night in Foster Field in front of 2,068 fans.
Dillas starter Dustin Taylor (1-0) got the win as he went six innings, gave up only three runs and five hits while striking out five. Colts starter Chandler Barnard (0-1) got the loss as he allowed four runs in an out past four innings. Dillas pitcher Richard Jessup got the save as he pitched the final three innings of scoreless baseball.
Amarillo got started in the second as Eric Brown, Justin Wenger and Willie James all had two-out singles, the final one scoring Brown for a 1-0 lead.
After a 27-minute lightning delay, the Dillas added on more. James led off with walk, followed by a Keanon Simon single to put runners on the corners. Stantrel Smith hit a sacrifice fly to score James, while Simon stole second. Carlos Figueroa followed with an RBI double to knock out Barnard. Usual starter Brian Henschel came in, but allowed a two-run homerun from Trent Lockwood to put the Dillas up 5-0.
After another delay, this time over an hour, Amarillo put another run in the sixth as James hit into a double play, but scored Brown from third for a 6-0 lead.
San Angelo scored their runs in the sixth inning as Jason Landreth hit a bases-loaded 3-RBI double for a three-run deficit, but the Dillas put another run on in the eighth off an error for a 7-3 lead.
Jessup came in for the seventh and pitched scoreless baseball in the final three innings to preserve the win and the Dillas championship.
With the victory, the Dillas win the United League Championship Series 3-2 over the Colts. The championship marks the second time in as many seasons Amarillo has won the United League title. The Dillas defeated the Alexandria Aces 2-1 last year. The Dillas match the Aces in titles as each team has two championships in four years of the United League's existence.
