
Dillas Earn Back-to-Back ULB Titles

San Angelo, Texas--- The Amarillo Dillas jumped out to a five-run advantage after five innings and didn't relinquish their lead the rest of the way, defeating San Angelo 7-3 in game five of the ULB Championship Series.
Both pitching staffs excelled early as the teams remained scoreless until the top of the second. With two outs, Eric Brown, Justin Wenger and Willie James hit soft singles to plate the first run of the contest. It was 1-0 Amarillo.
After a 27 minute rain delay in the bottom of the fourth, the game continued.
In the top of the fifth, the Dillas added to their lead. A walk to James and a single by Simon placed runners at the corners. A Sacrifice fly by Smith brought home Smith and the Dillas lead advanced to two. Figueroa sent a double to right field plating Simon.. The inning was capped off by a Trent Lockwood homer over the center-field wall, the four run inning tallied the score at 5-0 in favor of the Dillas.
Prior to the start of the bottom of the fifth inning, the game came upon a second rain delay. It would last and hour and four minutes before the contest resumed.
The top of the sixth inning began with consecutive singles to Brown and Wenger, runners were at the corners. Willie James was coaxed into a 6-4-3 double play, however, Brown scored from third base and the Dillas were up six.
The Colts got to Amarillo's starter Dustin Taylor in the bottom of the sixth. A two-out bases loaded double off the bat of Jason Landreth brought home three. After six complete innings, the Colts had the cut the six-run deficit in half. The score stood 6-3 Dillas.
Amarillo grabbed one of the runs back in the eighth. After one out was recorded, Brown reached on an error by Hank Lanto as pitcher, Brian Henschel, and his battery mate collided on a chopper in front of home plate. Wenger was hit by a pitch setting up Willie James. The shortstop of the Dillas hit a ball to John Anderson. Anderson tagged the runner heading to second but his throw to first was errant. Brown scored on the miscue and the Colts trailed 7-3.
San Angelo started a rally in the bottom of the eighth by sending runners to first and second with one out. Jason Landreth approached home plate, though, and grounded into an inning ending 6-4-3 double play.
The Colts were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth as Jessup was dominant in three innings of scoreless relief.
Southpaw Dustin Taylor earned the win tonight. The lefty went six innings allowing three earned runs. Chandler Barnard received the loss, going 4.1, giving up four earned runs. On short rest, Brian Henschel was a big contributor, completing 3.1, allowing two earned runs. Chace Vacek, Doug Brandt, and Tom Martin all combined to pitch shutout ball.
