July 12, 2010 - United League Baseball (ULB)
Amarillo Dillas News Release
The Amarillo Dillas Baseball Club announced today they are partnering with Camp Cactus so that children ages 6 - 12 who have been touched in some way by HIV/AIDS can experience the ultimate fun of being at a professional baseball game.
Camp Cactus is a non-profit, charitable organization based in the Texas panhandle. We provide two multi-day camps each year for children ages 6 to 12 who have been touched in some way by HIV/AIDS. Campers have the opportunity to interact with others who have similar experiences. They can be open with each other and share what they are going through. Most of all, the camp gives them a chance to be KIDS...to play and have fun! They have opportunities to participate in a variety of organized activities. The staff includes medical personnel to meet the children's needs as well as a variety of volunteer's from the community.
The lives of these children have not only been affected by HIV/AIDS, but they are also of the most financially impoverished groups in the Panhandle. It is not uncommon to find children who have never slept on an actual bed or seen hot water coming out of a tap. These are children, who on their Christmas list, do not ask for toys, but for food, underwear, or simply a toothbrush.
100% of all monies collected by Camp Cactus stay in the Panhandle and go toward these two camps. They provide camp facilities, food, supplies, and Christmas gifts. The camp holds a non-profit status. A 501(c)(3) is on file.
Through this partnership the Dillas will provide campers free admission on two different occasions including Tuesday, July 13 and Tuesday, July 27 when they play the Edinburg Roadrunners and the San Angelo Colts, respectively. One of Amarillo Dillas' missions is to be more than just a local professional sports team as the organization prides themselves on being a loyal community partner and for Dillas general manager Mark Lee a partnership with Camp Cactus is part of the loyalty.
"Providing an opportunity for these campers to come out and enjoy an evening of baseball on us (Dillas) is paramount for this organization", Lee said. "I can't begin to understand the challenges these kids endure on a daily basis and we welcome them with open arms".
The Dillas return home tomorrow night to begin a four-game series against the Edinburg Roadrunners before traveling to Rio Grande Valley on Saturday, July 17 to begin a four-game series against the WhiteWings. The Dillas return home on Thursday, July 22 to open an eight-game series that includes two Budweiser Thirsty Thursdays and an appearance by The Famous San Diego Chicken on Wednesday, July 28. Single-game tickets are available for purchase in-person or over the phone by visiting the Dillas Front Offices at 801 South Polk Street in downtown Amarillo or by calling (806) 342-0400. VISA and MasterCard accepted.
