Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen - United League Baseball's Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings announced today that right-handed relief pitcher Freddy Ballestas (6-3, 220) has left the team to play professional baseball in Japan.
The WhiteWings have deactivated Ballestas, retaining his rights should he return to the United States to play baseball.
"Ballestas has been dominant. Minor leagues, especially independent ball, are all about development. Whenever a guy moves to the next level, everyone should be happy because that's what it's all about. Those guys come over here just to go to the next level, to get their second chance, to go back to affiliated ball or go some place overseas and make some money. I'm very happy for him because he really earned the chance," WhtieWings manager Eddie Dennis said.
Ballestas leads the WhiteWings in wins with a 4-0 record and ERA at 1.21. In 13 relief appearances, he pitched 29.2 innings, striking out 38 while allowing 25 hits and 10 walks.
"He's not going straight to the major league team. He's going to the minor league. If he does in the minor league what he's been doing here, which I think he can, he's going to open someone's eyes at the major league level over there. He might be signed and make quite a few bucks," Dennis said.
