Amarillo Dillas News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Dillas Baseball Club announced transactions today that include the acquisition of infielder Cory Wine from the Washington Wild Things, Frontier League, for a player to be named later and signing free agent outfielder Terrance (TJ) Warren. The newest additions to the roster already have a common bond in that they both are former Philadelphia Phillies prospects.
A native of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Wine was drafted out of Penn State University by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 38th round of the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft. In his only season with the Gulf Coast Phillies, the slender six-foot-five first baseman appeared in 34 games batting .189 with 2 doubles while driving in 7 runs, in 74 official plate appearances. But don't be confused by his rookie numbers because as a senior Nittany Lion, Wine batted a career-best .307 with five homeruns and 41 RBI and during his junior year in 2008, Wine posted a .431 slugging percentage and six homeruns and went on eight and nine-game hitting streaks. In 2007, he started all but one game as a sophomore and collected 52 hits, five homeruns, four triples and 26 RBI. He also led the team with 29 walks. As a freshman in 2006, he batted .306 and set a single season record for putouts (419). Wine is a third-generation baseball player as his grandfather, Bobby, played for the Philadelphia Phillies, is currently an advanced scout for the Atlanta Braves and has spent over 40 years in professional baseball.
Terrance Jamal (TJ) Warren was an 8th round selection out of Bethel High School (Vallejo, CA) by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2006 MLB Amateur Draft. In four seasons the defending National League Champions' prospect, career numbers include a .232 batting average with 29 doubles 3 triples and 4 homeruns while driving in 65 runs to along with 31 stolen bases in 35 attempts. A native of Vallejo, California, spent time with the GCL Phillies, Lakewood Blueclaws, and Williamsport Crosscutters of the Gulf Coast League, South Atlantic League, and New York-Penn League respectively. Warren posted his best offensive numbers last year with Williamsport when he batted .286 with 4 doubles 1 triple and swiping 9 out of 11 bases.
These latest additions to the roster addresses some needs in the Dillas' lineup with the speedy Warren expected to fill a void in the outfield left behind from the departed Keanon Simon, Stantrel Smith and Terrence McClain. Wine a traditional first baseman has shown signs of power in the past which fits in nicely with the southwest jet stream that blows out of the leftfield at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa, but there has been some discussion of converting him to an outfielder but discussion is all it has been to this point. The earlier acquisition of outfielder/first baseman Cirilo Cruz gives Dillas manager Brady Bogart some flexibility and comfort which has the third-year skipper excited about his team, with just three weeks until training camp.
"Adding two young players like Cory (Wine) and TJ (Warren) not only fills up some holes in our lineup but they both bring experience and a hunger to continue on their career-path back to affiliated baseball", Bogart said. "Cory is solid defensively with some pop in his bat which will allow for flexibility at that position and TJ gives us some much needed leg-speed to cover the acreage in our ballpark, we are excited to have both of these young men".
ULB Opening Day 2010 is Thursday, May 27 when the Dillas travel to San Angelo for a two-game series against the Colts. The reigning United League Champions will open their home schedule Saturday, May 29, when the Colts follow the Dillas back to Amarillo to play a four-game series. Season tickets are still available and single-game tickets officially go on-sale the week of May 3rd.
