KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Augusta Coach Bubba Diggs knew what was coming when his Spartans took the field.
"This is not a running league, but I told those guys all week long that they were going to run the ball," Diggs said. "To be honest, you don't normally run the ball in an indoor league."
But despite their efforts, the Spartans could not stop Osceola running back Paul Sharpe, who torched Augusta for 97 yards and four touchdowns.
"We studied what [Augusta] did in practice and tonight it happened to be just like we practiced," Sharpe said.
Diggs, who was disappointed in his defense after the loss, commented on how adjustments were not made in the second half to help stop the GhostRiders' running game.
"Even Marquette [Smith] told me after the game he didn't think it was going to be that easy," Diggs said. "Again, it's just undisciplined players. I talked to them, I showed them the film and I thought that we had made some improvements."
On the night, Osceola totaled 112 yards rushing, eclipsing the previous record held by Daytona Beach (32). Augusta gave up 229 yards total for the game.
Diggs, however, is confident things will change.
"The things that need to be corrected, will be corrected or some players will not be part of this team," Diggs said.
NOTES: The Spartans did manage some WIFL firsts: Marvin Stone with the kickoff return for a TD, the team with a second quarter UNO and Shane Rowser with the first field goal ... Rowser was a respectable 3/4 on PATS but 1/5 on FGs ... The Ghostriders earned 223 "style points" and the Spartans 82 ... Richard Dykes had two interceptions.
