Augusta Colts News Release
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Bubba Diggs, Marvin Stone, Richard Dykes, Anthony Young and others on the Spartans' team, all have one thing in common - they all are from Augusta and showcasing the World Indoor Football League's strong ties to grass-roots football.
"It reminds me of the old days, like high school," said Dykes. "High school teams, from Augusta. I went to the championship when I was in Augusta and won. I got a ring for that. Gather again in the future, the present, got a game coming up Saturday, Championship, Augusta Spartans, it will be real good. I am looking forward to winning this game."
The opportunity to play on a hometown team is a unique experience and one that the players enjoy.
"It is a good environment," said Stone. "You know what I am saying; it is a home team environment. It's big for the home games, for the crowd support. It's fun."
This unique opportunity lends to the camaraderie that the team has and it shows out there on the field.
"We are a lot closer as a team," explained Stone. "We hang out a lot off of the field that brings us close on the field. It's just showing its seeds and we are where we want to be towards the end of the season."
Spending time together on and off of the field does have its advantages to game play, but local boys also attract big crowds of support.
"A lot of the players on the team are from Augusta," commented Dykes. "So, I know that we are going to have a big fan base there that is going to be cheering us to win this game."
Familiarity creates a strong team.
"It's shared throughout the team," Diggs explained about the camaraderie. "Even the guys who are from out of town. It is a close knit group. It says a lot about the talent in the CSRA, though." It means a lot to the local talent to be close to the ones that they love and play the sport that they love.
"It is great, it is a blessing," commented the coach. "That is what I always keep saying, family is important to me, my wife and my two kids. Now I have an extended family with this team.
