Dailey, Daniels Share WIFL Defensive Player of the Year
June 28, 2007 - World Indoor Football League 2 (WIFL 2)
Columbus Lions News Release
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Jauron Dailey and Damian Daniels of the Columbus Lions will share the award for World Indoor Football League defensive player of the year, it was announced Thursday, June 28, 2007.
Dailey, a Florida A&M product, led the league in sacks (9.5) while Daniels, a Columbus native who played his college ball at West Georgia, registered a league-high 12 interceptions in 12 games.
"Both deserve it,'' said Columbus coach Jason Gibson. "Their stats and their play on the field speak for itself."
Splitting the award works for both players.
"Justice was served," Daily said. "I wouldn't want to share it with anyone else."
Said Daniels: "This is even better then winning it outright. If I had won it, I would have been giving credit to my seven teammates any way, but this is good. We both made plays."
Dailey did consider his receiving the award a victory for linemen in a sport where most of the attention goes to wide receivers and defensive backs.
"Linemen do get overlooked sometimes," Dailey said. "But if you make the plays and post the stats, the wards and accolades take care of themselves."
Dailey and Daniels' teammate, Eugene Goodman, was named the league's special teams player of the year Monday, while Augusta Spartans wide receiver Marvin Stone was named offensive player of the year Tuesday and David Aubrey of the Osceola Ghostriders lineman of the year Wednesday.
Coach of the year and overall league MVP will be named Friday.
The Lions (10-4) host the Augusta Spartans (9-6) in the inaugural World Indoor Bowl Saturday.
