Diamond Dawgs give Olympian effort to beat Amsterdam

Even though the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs' colors are green and black, every player, Diamond Dawg and Amsterdam Mohawk alike, was seeing red, white and blue Monday night.
That was because Olympic bronze medalist Erin Hamlin was in attendance in Little Falls, there to throw out the first pitch and accept a proclamation by mayor Bob Peters. Hamlin, a native of Remsen, NY, won the bronze medal in Luge in this year's Olympics in Sochi, Russia, becoming the first American woman to medal in luge in any Olympic Games.
The Diamond Dawgs would get on the board first, as a big triple by catcher Eric Strano (Robbinsville, NJ/Rider) in the first inning would score leadoff hitter Joey Carcone (New Hartford, NY/St. Rose), who made his return to Veteran's Memorial Park after an extensive absence from the team. They would add another run on a fielder's choice by Mike Triller (Rutland, VT/Clemson), which scored Strano. Mohawks pitcher Taylor Blatch (Stuart, FL/Florida State) would face seven Diamond Dawgs before getting out of a second-and-third jam to end the inning.
The Diamond Dawgs struck again in the fifth inning, when Strano and Carcone hit back-to-back doubles, which scored Carcone. Mohawk Valley starter Bryan Greig (New City, NY/Mercy) was stellar for the Diamond Dawgs, allowing only one baserunner to get past first base before a line drive went off of his knee, and he was pulled for Enzo Esposito (Lawrenceville, NJ/Millersville). Greig, despite the injury, would still get the win, while Blatch would be saddled with the loss. Esposito continued the scoreless run for Mohawk Valley (21-15) before being pulled.
The Mohawks (29-9) would finally get on the board in the top of the eighth inning when reliever Matt Pidich (Aberdeen, NJ/Pittsburgh) would walk a run in with the bases loaded. That was as close as the Mohawks would get, as Pidich would only allow one baserunner in the ninth to close the door.
With the win, the Diamond Dawgs snap a three game losing streak.
Mohawk Valley hopes to keep their winning ways going tomorrow night as they come back to Veteran's Memorial Park to face the Albany Dutchmen. The Mohawks will try to keep their losing streak at one as they head back to Shuttleworth Park to face West cellar-dweller Utica.
