LOWELL, Mass. - Benn Ferriero and T.J. Trevelyan each potted two goals to lead the Worcester Sharks to a 5-1 win over the Lowell Devils in Game 5 of the Atlantic Division Semifinal on Wednesday at the Tsongas Center. With the victory, the Sharks claimed the series, 4-1, and move on to face the Manchester Monarchs.
Trailing 2-0 after the first period for the third time in this series, Lowell cut the lead down to one at 2:26 when David McIntyre worked a give-and-go out of the far corner that Nick Palmieri completed with a wrist shot along the ice that snuck by Alex Stalock.
The Devils would have a chance to tie the game later in the second with a power play near the midway point of the period, but instead found themselves down two once again. Ferriero took a lead pass and got behind the defense for a shorthanded breakaway goal that made the score, 3-1, at 9:44.
Worcester got help from its special teams once again as Andrew Desjardins' power play tally with a minute left in the second gave his team a three-goal cushion going into the locker room for the intermission.
Trevelyan completed the scoring with his second of the game, a slapshot from the left wing that eked by McKenna at 4:21 of the third.
The Sharks took a 1-0 lead at 10:24 of the first when Trevelyan picked off a clearing attempt and broke in alone before sending a wrist shot to the right side of the net.
Trevelyan would help Worcester to a two-goal edge less than three minutes later, stripping Tyler Eckford of the puck at the Devils blueline and feeding Ferriero on the far circle for his first of two on night.
McKenna turned aside 25-of-30 shots as the Devils' season came to an end after making the post season for the first time in team history. Stalock made 33 saves on 34 shots to help the Sharks skate on to the Atlantic Division Final.
