LOWELL, Mass. - Using three goals in the third period, the Worcester Sharks rallied from behind to claim a 4-2 win over the Lowell Devils in Game 4 of the Atlantic Division Semifinal on Tuesday at the Tsongas Center. With the loss, the Devils are on the brink of elimination, down 3-1 in the best-of-seven series.
Holding onto a 2-1 edge going into the third, Lowell was unable to stave off a Sharks' offense that held a 41-27 shot advantage and went 2-for-3 on the power play in the final frame.
John McCarthy tied the score at 4:28 when he accepted a pass from Dan DaSilva and beat Mike McKenna with a backhander from atop of the crease. The assist was one of DaSilva's three in the contest.
The Devils would then find themselves on the wrong end of consecutive man-advantages as the Sharks pulled ahead. Benn Ferriero bounced a Danny Groulx wrist shot down and into the back of the net to make the score, 3-2, midway through the third.
A 5-on-3 goal three minutes later gave Worcester some insurance as T.J. Trevelyan swept in a shot from the bottom of the right circle.
Through the 13 games of the season series, including the playoffs, the team that has scored has come out victorious. After a flurry of Sharks offense early in the opening period, the Devils were able to throw a counterpunch and take a 1-0 lead at 1:55 when Alexander Vasyunov pounced on a turnover in front of Alex Stalock and lifted the puck into the corner of the net.
Worcester would eventually tie the score at 9:18 of the same period as DaSilva skated behind the net and fired a reverse pass to the far circle that Andrew Desjardins swatted into the net.
Patrick Davis put Lowell back on top 3:36 into the second with a backhander from the far dot that snuck through the pads of Stalock.
McKenna stopped 37-of-41 shots in the loss for the Devils.
