Devils Crown Royals for First Win

Trenton Devils News Release

Trenton, NJ - Trevor Kell scored two goals and an assist, and Ryan Ginand scored a goal and two assists to pace the Devils' offense as Trenton defeated Reading 6-4 at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton on Sunday afternoon. Goaltender Jeff Lerg (1-0) made 36 of 40 saves in the game which was Kevin Dean's first-career victory as Head Coach.

Devils' captain Trevor Kell opened up the scoring early by notching his first two tallies of the season. First, Kell beat Royals' goaltender, Adam Courchaine, with a slap shot from the right wing boards just 14 seconds into the opening frame to make the score 1-0. Kell's second tab came on a lightning quick wrist shot after a quick Ryan Ginand pass through the neutral zone sprung a 2-on-1 for the Devils which the home team executed with precision. After Ryan Ginand and Kory Nagy both added their first goals of the season, Reading was forced to make a goalie change, replacing a shell-shocked Courchaine with Saturday night's winning goaltender, Ben Scrivens.

Although Reading added two goals of its own, including Eric Castonguay's first goal in a Royals uniform on the power play, the Devils ended the first period with an exclamation point, when last season's leading scorer Jeff Prough finessed his way through a Reading defenseman in the high slot, got tripped up, but sill beat Scrivens with a top-shelf backhand shot, making the score 5-2 in favor of the Devils.

After a scoreless second period, Casey Haines of the Royals narrowed the Trenton lead to 5-3 at 4:25 of the third period, depositing a fat rebound which Jeff Lerg kicked right into the slot, following a hard low shot by Mikhail Stefanovich, who recorded his second assist of the game being credited with an assist on the play. Reading's Josh Engel added another goal to make the score 5-4 with 3:53 remaining in regulation, and Reading carried the play throughout the latter portion of the third, finishing the contest outshooting Trenton 40-33. But as much as the Devils bent, they wouldn't break. Jeff Lerg stood tall, making 14 of his 36 total saves in the third period, collecting his first win of the season after winning one of his two starts for the Devils in 2009-10.

Ryan Ginand made the score 6-4 with just over a minute remaining in the third by adding an empty-net goal. Trevor Kell's assist on Ginand's insurance marker was his third point of the game and afterwards, the Devils' captain was named the game's first star. Devils' forward Matt Kang also had a strong game, gathering two assists in his Trenton debut. The Devils won't be in action again until October 23, when they travel to face the Wheeling Nailers at the Cambria Count War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, PA. The Devils will be back at the Sun National Bank Center on Thursday, October 28, when they take on the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:00 p.m.
