Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE (Dec. 31, 2007) -- The Detroit Ignition scored three goals in the final five minutes of the first half and held on for a 10-4 victory over the Milwaukee Wave in the annual New Year's Eve game Monday at U.S. Cellular Arena in front of 5,072 fans.
Detroit (8-3) moved into first place with Chicago and New Jersey; the Wave fell to 7-4 and are fourth, just a half-game ahead of California (6-4).
The last of the three goals happened with just 8 seconds remaining in the second quarter, when Nick Vorberg came far out to challenge Worteh Sampson, who was breaking away on the counterattack. Vorberg was called for a penalty, and Ricardinho converted the resulting shootout against Troy Dusosky. That made the score 8-2.
"For the most part, I thought we played well in the second quarter," said Wave coach Keith Tozer. "I thought we played well in the first quarter."
Joe Di Buono's volley from the right corner with 12:24 remaining in the third quarter pulled the Wave within 8-4, but that would be their last goal in their lowest offensive output of the season. Joe Hammes came on as the sixth attacker with 6:10 remaining, after Jonathan Greenfield scored a counter-attack goal to make it 10-4.
The Wave also failed to convert either of their power plays. Detroit leads in the league in penalty kills.
Greg Howes scored the Wave's other goal, giving him 40 points for the season. He trails Monterrey's Dino Delevski by one point in the MISL scoring race. Marcio Leite was held without a point.
Friday night, the Wave host the Philadelphia KiXX at 7 p.m. It's BOGO Night, and fans can pre-order a buy one, get one free special by calling the Wave office at 414-224-9283.
