Detroit Ignition News Release
(Plymouth, Mich., - March 8, 2009) - The Detroit Ignition (8-6) came into tonight's game amid a three-game losing streak, the second game of which was lost to the New Jersey Ironmen (6-8) just last weekend. The Ignition had never lost more than three games in a row, and they made sure not to set a new team record by posting a decisive 21-14 victory of the Ironmen tonight. The combination of Detroit's victory and Milwaukee's loss to Chicago knots the Ignition back into a tie for first place with the Wave.
Seven different Ignition players found the back of the net this afternoon, and forward Leo Gibson netted the first goal for Detroit at 5:11 of the first quarter. Veteran defender Wes Sechrist added two more points for the Ignition, who found themselves tied at 4-all at the start of the second thanks to New Jersey goals from Lucio Gonzaga and Tiguinho. Miki Djerisilo and Zach Wilkes scored for Detroit in the second, but the Ironmen put three more goals past Danny Waltman before halftime, entering the break with a 10-8 lead.
Detroit's momentum didn't slow in the second half - Assadpour, Gibson, Ryan Mack and Mike Apple added eight points for the Ignition, and the club's defensive unit held the Ironmen to just one goal in the period.
Djerisilo opened up the final stanza with a two-pointer from Assadpour, prompting the visitor's to bring in former Ignition player Chile Farias as the sixth attacker. The Ironmen tallied one more goal before night's end, but Wilkes scored a three-point shot on New Jersey's empty net to bring the final score to 21-14.
The Ignition will face the Milwaukee Wave next Sunday, March 15 in a battle for the top spot in the XSL. Kick off for Sunday's game is 3:00 pm (EST).
