Chicago Storm News Release
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (March 8, 2009) - Playing with great energy against the league's first-place team, the Chicago Storm rallied from a 4-0 third-quarter deficit to defeat the Milwaukee Wave 19-10 on Sunday at the Sears Centre.
Goalkeeper Bayard Elfvin, signed this week to replace the injured Jeff Richey, not only stopped 12 shots but picked up two assists as the Storm poured it on in the fourth period. The Storm (7-9) brought the Wave (8-6) back to the pack in the XSL standings.
Two clutch goals by the Storm's active midfield put the game away. With the Storm holding a 12-10 lead, Andy Rosenband sprinted out on a breakaway, made a nice cut against sliding Milwaukee keeper Nick Vorberg, then chased down the ball and knocked it into the empty net with 5:58 to go.
Chicago took a penalty with 4:35 left, and with the Wave already 3-for-3 on power plays, they stood a good chance to draw within one score. But after the Wave's Troy Dusosky added to the advantage as the sixth attacker, Ian Bennett sprinted ahead of the pack down the right flank after a takeaway and slid a 3-pointer past the retreating Dusosky for a 17-10 margin. Chris Cerroni added another score with under 30 seconds left for the final margin.
Stephen Armstrong and Bennett each finished with five points; Sunday was Armstrong's first game back after a lengthy absence due to an ankle injury. Rosenband also had two goals as the Storm posted their season-high point total and largest margin of victory.
Chicago was shut out in the first half against Milwaukee for the second consecutive week, but after giving up the first goal of the third quarter on the power play, the offense came alive. Dan Antoniuk fed Rosenband, then scored on a restart to tie the game 4-all. The lead see-sawed from there until the Storm's two important goals.
The Storm continue their March homestand at 3 p.m. Sunday against New Jersey. For tickets, order online at Ticketmaster.com or call 1-866-STORM81.
