March 23, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Detroit Fury News Release

QUICK FACTS:
Detroit Fury (2-4) at Chicago Rush (5-1)
Date: Sunday, March 28, 2004
Kickoff: 3:00 p.m. ET
Site: Allstate Arena (16,000)
Officials: Craig Wrolstad (Referee), Rick Lowe (Umpire),
Gary Cavaletto (Head Linesman), Rusty Baines (Line Judge)
Scott Helverson (Back Judge).
Radio: WDFN, 1130 AM
Matt Dery (Play-by-Play)
TV: None
Series Record: 2-3
Last Meeting: Friday, April 4, 2003
Chicago 62 – Detroit 45
Streaks: Chicago – Win 1
Detroit – Lose 3
Coaches: Chicago – Mike Hohensee (31-24, 4th Year)
Detroit – Tom Luginbill (2-4, 1st Year)

THE STAKES: Detroit needs a win badly, as they are currently on a three-game losing streak. Nearing the halfway point in the season, the playoff race is starting to take shape, and the Fury need a win to climb back into the hunt. The Rush continue to impress at home, as they are coming off a crushing win over the Orlando Predators. A loss for Detroit drops them farther towards the bottom of the standings, making it difficult to keep pace with the eight open playoff spots. A win would also improve Detroit's conference and division record.

THE SERIES: This will be the sixth overall meeting between the Rush and the Fury. The Rush currently hold the 3-2 advantage over the Fury, winning the last three contests between the teams. Detroit has not beaten the Chicago since June 23, 2001, when Detroit beat Chicago 47-37 in Chicago.

HEAD COACHES:

TOM LUGINBILL, Detroit (2-4, 1st Year): Luginbill enters his first season as an AFL head coach, after taking the reigns from his father Al, who served as the Fury's head coach in 2003. At 30 years old, Luginbill is the youngest head coach in the AFL, and he looks forward to a breakout season as head coach. Last season, Luginbill helped to re-build the Fury team from a 1-13 record in 2002. With his guidance, the Fury finished the regular season at 8-8, which tied the AFL record for a single-season turnaround. The Fury also finished 1-1 in the playoffs, and the franchise won its first-ever playoff game. Prior to joining the Fury, Luginbill had coached for three different teams in three years, but he is no stranger to the game of Arena Football. Luginbill played two seasons as an AFL quarterback in 1996 & 1997, before joining the coaching staff on the New York CityHawks in 1998. Luginbill got his first head-coaching job in 2000, with the Tennessee Valley Vipers of af2, where he led the team to the championship game in his first year with the team. Following a season in af2, Luginbill teamed with his father Al in the XFL as the quarterback's coach of the Los Angeles Xtreme. There, he coached XFL MVP Tommy Maddox, and helped guide the Xtreme to the league's first and only championship. He re-joined the AFL in 2002 as an assistant head coach with the expansion Dallas Desperados. In Dallas, Luginbill's offense set an AFL record for scoring the most points ever by an AFL expansion franchise in one year, and his red-zone offense was ranked number one in the league.

MIKE HOHENSEE, Chicago (31-24, 4th Year): Hohensee enters his fourth season as the Rush's head coach, but enters his 11th season as a head coach in the Arena Football League. Last season, he led a young Rush team to a 8-8 record and a third straight appearance in the ArenaBowl playoffs. Hohensee currently ranks fifth on the AFL's all-time list for most wins by a head coach, with an overall record of 78-74. He got his coaching start in the AFL in 1989 as an assistant coach with the Chicago Bruisers. Hohensee became the first AFL player to join the AFL as a coach. He has served as a head coach of five different teams: the Washington Commandos, Albany Firebirds, Anaheim Piranhas, New England Sea Wolves and the Chicago Rush. Hohensee began his AFL career with the Pittsburgh Gladiators and played for two seasons (1987-1988), but his career was ended due to a neck injury. He threw the first touchdown pass in AFL history and appeared in the first ArenaBowl. Hohensee has also played professionally in the USFL, CFL and briefly in the NFL. Played two seasons at the University of Minnesota. Named the Gophers MVP and Athlete of the Year after both years.

FURY IN THE COMMUNITY:

FURY HOSPITAL VISITS

Members of the Fury Team visit local area hospitals to bring cheer and hope to children during their stay. Often, players and coaches will "take over" the ward, filling it with Fury decorations. Players spend time with the children, sign autographs and leave special gifts behind. The Fury hope that these events will leave a lasting impression on the children and provide a life long memory they are sure to never forget.

FURY FIELD TRIPS PROGRAM

The Fury Field Trips program is designed to encourage young people's interest in science, math and technology by introducing them to real-life examples of how the sciences are used in the world around them. The goal of Fury Field Trips is to instill an interest in the sciences that they will carry through adulthood.

THE 2004 SEASON

In 2004, the Fury are still committed to making a difference off the field. The Fury will continue to host Fury Field Trips and Hospital Visits throughout the season. This season, the Fury will have four hospital visits to local area hospitals, with the first happening Tuesday, February 17, at St. Joseph Mercy Macomb Hospital. Fury players Jon McCall, Dawan Moss, David Hill and cheerleaders visited the pediatric wing of the hospital and brought Fury swag and cheer to all the kids. The players and cheerleaders also toured the rest of the hospital.

The Fury have their next hospital visit planned for Tuesday, March 30. Select Fury players and cheerleaders will visit the children and other patients at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

The Fury will embark on their first Field Trip of the season on April 13, 2004 when a group of players will join 50-100 students from local youth groups in metro-Detroit as they tour the weather studios in WDIV Channel 4. Meteorologist Andrew Humphrey will take the students on a tour of the studio, explaining how we predict the weather and the technology used to get the weather on TV.

The players will help guide the children around, and later on, they will talk about how they use technology to become better football players on and off the field. They will also give out Fury swag and gear to all the participants involved on the Field Trip.

LAST WEEK (VS. AUSTIN):

AUBURN HILLS, MICH – The Detroit Fury committed four turnovers and lost two starting players to injury as they fell 70-58 to the Austin Wranglers. Detroit (2-4) has now lost three games in a row and has lost two straight games to expansion teams.

The Wranglers (4-2) used a huge performance from quarterback John Kaleo and offensive specialist Tacoma Fontaine. Kaleo finished the game completing 16-of-30 passes for 282 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception. His main target, Fontaine, caught seven passes for 205 yards five touchdowns.

Austin also capitalized on four Detroit turnovers. On their first play of the game, defensive back Charlie Davidson intercepted Fury quarterback Andy Kelly. Later on, Kelly fumbled a snap, fullback Cameron Chance fumbled a pitch and lineman Tom Briggs sacked Kelly, forcing the ball to the turf.

Despite the turnover, Fury Andy Kelly had a strong offensive performance. He completed 24-of-38 passes for 355 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. Kelly's main targets were receivers Thabiti Davis and David Hill.

Davis finished the night with nine catches for 99 yards and one touchdown, and offensive specialist David Hill had a breakout performance, catching eight passes for 140 yards and four touchdowns.

Detroit newcomer Carl Bond shined for the Fury. In his first game of the season, Bond made two catches for 60 yards, one touchdown, returned one kickoff for 24 yards and made one tackle and one interception on defense.

The Fury suffered another rash on injuries in the game. Defensive specialist Ron Carpenter suffered a popped rib in the first quarter and did not return to the game. In the second half, Fury WR/LB Thabiti Davis pulled his hamstring and WR/DB Jeff Russell sprained his left knee.

FURY NOTES / TRENDS:

Better with Age: When the Fury defensive backfield that includes Ron Carpenter, Adrian Lunsford and Jeff Russell takes the field, their combined age will be 99 years old. Carpenter (34), Lunsford (33) and Russell (32) are all experienced veterans of the AFL, and they have a combined total of 21 AFL seasons of experience.

Winless in March: Maybe it is a bad string of luck, but in the Month of March, the Fury's overall record is 2-6, with both of the wins coming on the road in the last two weekends of March of 2003. If the Fury lose at Chicago, they will have gone the entire month of March without a victory.

Stop Passing the Ball: So far in 2004, quarterback Andy Kelly has accumulated three passing games of over 300 yards, and in all three contests, the Fury have lost. Detroit is 2-1 when Kelly passes for less than 300 yards. He has totals of 375 (@ Colorado), 312 (@ New Orleans) and 355 (vs. Austin) in the last three weeks. His total of 375 yards was a career best, and he is on pace to beat his personal best in yards in a season.

Flip of the Coin: So far in 2004, the Fury have only won one coin toss, but in their only coin toss win of the season, the Fury ended up kicking off in both halves due to a quirky rule. Last week against Austin, the Fury opted to kick rather than defer, giving Austin the choice of receiving the ball to open both halves of play.

Familiar Face: When the Fury travel to Chicago, they will be bringing a former Rush player with them in quarterback Billy Dicken. Dicken played for the Rush for three seasons, guiding the team to the playoffs the last three years and being named the team's MVP in 2002.

Nope, they aren't twins: Pictured below are Fury kicker Mark Lewis and NBA star Jason Kidd of the New Jersey Nets. So far this season, Lewis has been mistaken for Kidd on two of the three road trips of the season. While they do not play the same sport, both have a great ability to handle a ball. Lewis is nearly flawless on PAT's going 33-of-34 and making over 50% of his field goals.

RUNNING WITH THE RECORDS: Watch as Fury Quarterback Andy Kelly continues his assault on the Arena Football League's record books, as he hopes to remain the league's all-time leading passer. AFL Veterans Aaron Garcia (NY) and Sherdrick Bonner (AZ) are right behind.
