Buffalo Destroyers News Release

(BUFFALO, NY)- The Buffalo Destroyers released K Steve McLaughlin on Monday after one season with the team. McLaughlin earned second team All-Arena honors in 2002 with the Destroyers.

McLaughlin, who signed with Buffalo as a free agent prior to the 2002 season, set the Destroyers single season and career records for PAT's with 75 and PAT attempts with 79. He was second in the league converting 95% of his extra points. He tied for seventh with 14 field goals going 14-37 this season. He was seventh among kickers with 117 points.

McLaughlin, a five year Arena Football League veteran, is one of the most accurate kickers in the history of the AFL. He is seventh in league history in PAT's (335), PAT attempts (365) and field goals made (75). He is seventh all-time for scoring by a kicker with 557 career points. In 2001, McLaughlin led all-kickers with 152 points which was also ninth overall.

"It was a tough decision to let Steve go because he is one of the most consistent kickers in the league," said Destroyers head coach Ron Selesky. "We are starting a new chapter in Destroyers football and I wanted to give a young kicker an opportunity.

McLaughlin became expendable when Buffalo acquired K Brian Schmitz from the Carolina Cobras in exchange for the seventh pick in last month's AFL Dispersal Draft. The league held the Dispersal Draft enabling every team to select a player from the Toronto Phantoms roster. Toronto suspended operations for the 2003 season.

Buffalo kicks off its fifth season in the Arena Football League on February 1, 2003 at the HSBC Arena as the Destroyers host the Grand Rapids Rampage at 7 p.m. Season and group tickets are on sale now. Call 881-4444 today!
