Dallas Desperados News Release
The Dallas Desperados today announce the re-signing of OS Shannon "Skinny" Culver, FB/LB Patrick Scott and WR/DB Ty Tolbert.
Culver, a four-year AFL veteran, finished the 2002 season second on the team with 61 catches for 653 yards and 10 touchdowns. He saw action in only three of the first eight games, recording seven receptions for 75 yards. After OS Dialleo Burks was lost for the season with a wrist injury against Indiana (6/8), Culver stepped into the starting specialist role and proceeded to catch 54 passes for 578 yards over the remaining six games. He led the team with 10 catches for 113 yards at Arizona (6/16), and he caught nine passes for 132 yards and four touchdowns against San Jose (6/29). He then established career-highs with 16 receptions for 153 yards at Chicago (7/13). He finished Dallas' two game postseason run with 14 receptions for 141 yards and four touchdowns, including the game-winning scoring catch against Indiana (7/27) in a first round playoff game.
Scott, a four-year AFL veteran, started the 2002 season as an OL/DL, but made the switch to FB/LB midway through the year. He finished the season with 12 tackles, three passes defensed, a forced fumble and a blocked kick on defense while catching two passes for 15 yards and rushing the ball four times for 16 yards and a touchdown. He registered his first career reception â for three yards â and first career rushing attempts â three for 17 yards and a score â at Los Angeles (6/1). He totaled three tackles, a deflected pass and a forced fumble while catching one pass for 12 yards and rushing the ball once against Tampa Bay (6/22). He finished the postseason with four stops and half a sack on defense while carrying the ball once for no gain.
Tolbert signed to the Desperados practice squad one day prior to the season opener in Carolina (4/20) and remained there throughout his first Arena Football League season.
The Desperados kick off the 2003 season on Feb. 2 by hosting the New York Dragons. NBC Sports â in their first season associated with the AFL â will televise the game, as well as up to 70 other AFL games throughout the season. The 2003 AFL season will consist of 16 regular season games â eight home games and eight road games â instead of 14 games as in the past.
