Buffalo Destroyers News Release

(BUFFALO, NY) – The Buffalo Destroyers will look to be the first team in 2002 to hand the San Jose Sabercats a loss when they meet at the HSBC Arena Saturday night at 7:00PM.

The Sabercats are the Arena Football League's lone undefeated team at 6-0 while the Destroyers are the only team in the National Conference who is undefeated at home at 4-0.

"We need to play error free football," said Destroyers head coach and general manager Ray Bentley. "Execution is the number one thing they do. People usually beat themselves...San Jose hasn't done that yet."

San Jose QB Mark Grieb, who the Destroyers looked at signing in the off-season before they acquired Fred McNair, leads the league with 36 touchdown passes and only two interceptions. The Sabercats score a league high 67.3 points per game.

"Offensively San Jose reminds me of the St. Louis Rams in the NFL," said Destroyers WR/DB Bret Cooper. "I see this game as a playoff type game."

The Destroyers defense is ranked fourth in the league giving up 47.3 points per game. DS Corey Johnson is in the top five in the league in tackles (5th with 34.5), interceptions (2nd with 4) and pass defenses (3rd with 13).

Destroyers OS Lamont Cooper is second in the league with 1,186 all-purpose yards. He is also in the top ten in touchdowns 8th with 12), receiving yards (7th with 423) and kickoff return average (3rd at 23.8 yards per return).

Coach Bentley believes that the game will rest with his offense. "We must sustain drives on offense," Bentley added. "We must control the tempo of the game and control the football. The biggest thing with the offense is protecting the quarterback."

Saturday's game will be on radio at 107.7 FM WNSA and 1240 AM WJTN.
