Columbus Destroyers News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Destroyers have signed two-year AFL veteran wide receiver/defensive back Ira Gooch and traded defensive specialist Dwaine Carpenter and future considerations to Arizona in exchange for offensive/defensive linemen Norman Heuer and Shane Jones, team president David Paitson announced today. To make room for the acquisitions, offensive specialist Randall Lane and wide receiver/defensive back Lenzie Jackson were waived.
Gooch (6-0, 190, Central Michigan) joins the Destroyers as a four-year veteran to the game of Arena Football after he got his start with the Quad-City Steamwheelers of the arenafootball2 league, where he set numerous league records and was named First Team all-af2 in 2003. In two seasons in the AFL, Gooch has improved on his numbers each season and has caught a combined 82 passes for 1,141 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Heuer (6-5, 300, Michigan) enters his rookie season fresh off winning World Bowl XII with the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe. In 11 games with the Admirals, Heuer had 20 tackles (10 solo) to go along with one sack and two pass deflections. Heuer was originally signed by the Washington Redskins on Apr. 30, 2004 and was picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles this past January and assigned to NFL Europe. At Michigan, Heuer was the co-recipient of the Dick Katcher award as Michigan's top defensive lineman.
Jones (6-1, 308, Arizona State) joins the Destroyers after spending his collegiate career at Arizona State. In two seasons with the Sun Devils, Jones totaled 89 tackles (46 solo), 10.5 tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks while adding an interception and fumble recovery. Prior to Arizona State, Jones was an all-conference player for Sacramento City College.
Entering its fourth season in 2006, NBC will continue to broadcast the non-stop excitement of Arena Football each Sunday throughout the season. Check your local listings for the game in your area beginning on Sunday, Jan. 29 on the AFL on NBC.
