Rampage mini camp ends, five players placed on recallable waivers
December 5, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Grand Rapids Rampage News Release
Last Friday, the Grand Rapids Rampage began its 2006 season with a three-day mini-camp at the Soccer Spot in Kentwood.
"We had an early opportunity to look at all our free-agent signings and returning players to see where they fit in," said Rampage head coach Sparky McEwen. "No player can earn a starting job during mini-camp; however, players can be released and we get an extra month to replace them."
Monday morning McEwen announced that five players from the mini-camp would be placed on recallable waivers: OS Anthony Bright, WR/DB Dwight Counter, OL/DL Oscar Grajeda, DS Chazz Moore and lineman Albert Reese.
"All five of these players are great athletes with lots of potential for continued success in this game," stated McEwen. "However, they were not a fit for our system so we'll begin immediately recruiting players to fill their positions for training camp."
Friday's mini-camp started with conditioning drills to measure each players' strength and condition; the drills will be repeated again on the first day of training camp in January. After a short break, the players were back on the field for some non-pads implementation of the playbook as well as numerous drills. Mini-camp concluded after early-morning practices on Saturday and Sunday.
In what is fast becoming a mini-camp tradition, the Rampage players donated new, unopened toys to the Salvation Army Angel Tree after Friday's practice. Over 100 toys were donated by the players.
The Rampage will open their ninth training camp on January 2, 2006 at the Soccer Spot in Kentwood. During training camp, the Rampage are scheduled to travel to Kansas City and San Jose for inter-squad practices/scrimmages with the Brigade and SaberCats. A complete training camp schedule with times, locations and dates will be released soon.
