Columbus Destroyers News Release
COLUMBUS, OHIO â When the Columbus Destroyers open their second AFL season at home on Friday, January 28 against the Nashville Kats, the team is also kicking off a new community initiative in conjunction with the Mid-Ohio FoodBank to "Tackle Hunger" in Central Ohio.
Beginning with the home opener and continuing throughout the 2005 season, fans are asked to bring non-perishable food items to each home game at Nationwide Arena for donation to the Mid-Ohio FoodBank. In turn, fans will receive one raffle ticket per donated food item for a chance to win a team-autographed, authentic AFL football. One winner will be announced during the fourth quarter of each game.
In addition to the eight-game collection drive, members of the Columbus Destroyers plan to further support the "Tackle Hunger" initiative with visits to the Mid-Ohio FoodBank to help pack boxes for distribution to local food pantries. Players and team personnel will also lend a hand at Faith Mission to serve meals and spend time with residents during several trips scheduled throughout the season.
"We're looking forward to the Destroyers' second season here in Columbus and excited that the team will be partnering with Mid-Ohio FoodBank to âTackle Hunger' off the field while they're tackling their opponents at Nationwide Arena. So many families are facing hunger this winter. Destroyers fans will have an easy way to make a big difference when they attend a game," according to Matt Habash, executive director of Mid-Ohio FoodBank.
"The Destroyers are excited about partnering with Mid-Ohio FoodBank this season to âTackle Hunger' in Central Ohio. We are sure that with our passionate fans and the giving nature of our community, we will be able to provide many meals for families in need," added David Paitson, president of the Columbus Destroyers.
