Desperados Kubiak Named AFL Offensive Player of the Week

The Arena Football League today announced that Dallas Desperados quarterback Jim Kubiak has been named the league's Offensive Player of the Week. The award is the first such honor for Kubiak and is the second time a Desperados player has been named AFL Offensive Player of the Week (Andy Kelly, vs. Indiana, 6/8/02).
Kubiak led a Desperados offense last weekend that scored a season-high 65 points in a thrilling 65-64 overtime victory over the Rattlers in Arizona. He finished the game completing 33-of-45 passes for 387 yards, seven touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for two scores. His completions and passing yardage totals established new club records, and his seven touchdown passes tied his career-best figure.
Kubiak spearheaded a Dallas charge that saw the team score touchdowns on nine-of-11 possessions. After leading the team to scores on their first eight possessions, Kubiak was intercepted on Dallas' ninth possession, but he recovered a fumble that teammate Shannon Culver forced on the ensuing return. Dallas then tied the game with a Jason Wells field goal with less than a minute remaining in regulation. After Arizona opened the overtime period with a touchdown (PAT failed), Kubiak led the team on a seven-play, 48-yard drive that culminated with a 10-yard touchdown toss to Culver. Wells then converted the extra point to give the Desperados the victory.
For his efforts at America West Arena Sunday afternoon, Kubiak was named the game's Most Valuable Player following the conclusion of the contest. For the season, he has completed 120-of-180 passes for 1,548 yards, 28 touchdowns and three interceptions. His passing yardage total for the season is second in the league, trailing only Aaron Garcia (1,682) of the New York Dragons. Kubiak is on pace to pass for 4,954 yards this season, which eclipses the AFL's single season passing yards record by 439 yards.
Kubiak and the rest of the Dallas Desperados return to Reunion Arena this weekend to host the Colorado Crush.
