Desperados Hold Open Tryouts in Monterrey, Mexico
November 20, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Dallas Desperados News Release
This Saturday, Nov. 22, the Dallas Desperados will become the first Arena Football League team to hold open tryouts in Mexico. With the growing popularity of American football in Mexico and the increasing number of people playing competitive American football in Mexico, Saturday's tryouts give the club an opportunity to tap a previously unused resource.
The Dallas Desperados and the Dallas Cowboys have always considered Mexico important to the success of their teams, especially since the Dallas Cowboys rank #1 in sports team popularity among Hispanic fans.
"Traditionally, the Cowboys have always had a tremendous Hispanic following in the United States and Mexico," states Desperados President and General Manager Jerry Jones, Jr. "The great success the Cowboys organization has had in Mexico is evident by the two American Bowl games the Cowboys played in Mexico City against the Houston Oilers and Oakland Raiders, which are two of the largest attended games in NFL history. That speaks volumes to the passion for American football in Mexico.
"We think this is a unique opportunity as we evolve football into a year-round entertainment event through the channels of Arena football," continues Jones. "The Desperados holding tryouts in Mexico is precedent setting and is something that we look to grow in the future."
The tryouts will take place on the Tecnologico de Monterrey campus, and the Desperados will put participants through a 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle and standing broad jump. Selected players who meet predetermined performance standards will then be invited to participate in an elite workout later that day, where players will be evaluated in drills specific to Arena football.
Registration for the tryouts begins at 8:00 a.m., with specific registration for offensive/defensive linemen, fullbacks and linebackers beginning at 9:00 a.m., for defensive backs, wide receivers and quarterbacks at 9:30 a.m. and for kickers at 10:00 a.m. The elite workout will take place at 3:00 p.m. The registration fee is 200 Mexican Pesos â payable in cash or certified check â and the proceeds from the fee will go to a charity fund selected by the ITESM Campus Monterrey Football Department.
