Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
BILOXI, MS - The Mississippi Sea Wolves announced on Thursday that they have signed defenseman Matt Deschamps. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"We're pleased to have Matt Deschamps return to Mississippi for the upcoming season," said Sea Wolves head coach Steffon Walby. "His contributions off the ice, both as a leader in the locker room and in the community with his Deschamp's Den program, are great assets to the Sea Wolves and the Gulf Coast."
Deschamps recorded two goals and 20 assists in 70 games for the Sea Wolves in 2007-08, and appeared in all four Kelly Cup Playoff games in the post season. Prior to turning professional, Deschamps played four seasons of college hockey from 2001-05 at the University of Maine, appearing in 111 games, scoring three goals and 13 assists. The 6-0, 195-pounder appeared in four regular season games and three Kelly Cup Playoff games with Atlantic City in 2004-05 after completing his college career. Deschamps spent 2005-06 with the ECHL's Fresno Falcons, scoring 11 points (2g, 9a) in 63 regular season games, and notched one assist in six Kelly Cup Playoff contests. He also appeared in two games with the Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League during 2005-06. Deschamps appeared in 12 games with Charlotte, notching two assists, before finishing the year with the Phoenix RoadRunners, where he posted nine points (2g, 7a) in 39 games.
During the 2007-08 season, Deschamps, in association with Crescent Trucks of New Orleans, began the Deschamps Den program, where special-needs and developmentally disabled children and their families are given tickets in section 27 that are donated by local businesses.
"Kids with special needs are really important to me. I have a niece with Down's Syndrome, so it's in the forefront of my mind and who I am as a person," said Deschamps. "It's been special to be able to put my name on a program that gives the kids and their families an opportunity to come out and enjoy the game."
