Deonte Burton and Stanley Johnson Named to February 2024 USA Basketball Men's AmeriCup Qualifying Team

Today, USA Basketball announced that Stockton Kings guard Deonte Burton and forward Stanley Johnson were selected to compete in the February 2024 USA Basketball Men's AmeriCup Qualifying Team that will host Cuba in Kissimmee, Florida, on February 22 before traveling to Cuba to compete on February 25.

Burton, a 6-4 guard, started his collegiate career at Marquette (2013-15) where he earned Big East All-Rookie team honors (2014) before transferring to Iowa State (2015-17). In his senior season, Burton finished as the fourth player in Big 12 history to have 60 steals, 40 blocks and average more than 15 points earning him Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honors (2016). Burton has spent time with the Sacramento Kings, Oklahoma City Thunder, Oklahoma City Blue, Maine Celtics, and Korean Basketball League. He was named a member of the February 2023 USA Men's Basketball World Cup Qualifying Team. Burton currently plays for the Stockton Kings, where he is shooting 42.8% from the field and averaging 10.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.5 blocks in 28.6 minutes on the season.

Johnson, a 6-6 forward and former Arizona standout (2014-15), racked up several honors including Pac-12 Freshman of the Year (2015), First Team All-Pac-12 (2015) and Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award (2015). He was drafted by the Detroit Pistons with the eighth pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Johnson has since spent time with the Toronto Raptors, Los Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs, New Orleans Pelicans, Grand Rapids Gold (formerly Grand Rapids Drive), Raptors 905, and South Bay Lakers. Johnson currently suits up for the Stockton Kings, shooting 51.4% from the field and averaging 12.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.5 blocks in 24.7 minutes on the season. Johnson won three FIBA gold medals on USA Basketball Junior National Teams that date back to 2011. He also played in the 2014 Nike Hoop Summit and was a member of the 2016 USA Select Team.

Training camp will be held from February 16-21 in Kissimmee, Florida before hosting Cuba on February 22 at 2:10 p.m. PT. Tickets are on sale now at The USA will then travel to Havana to face Cuba on February 25.

The AmeriCup Qualifying Window is the first of three in advance of the 2025 FIBA Men's AmeriCup. The USA will also square off with Group D opponents Puerto Rico and the Bahamas in upcoming qualifying windows in November 2024 and February 2025.

FIBA AmeriCup Qualifying consists of 16 teams distributed into four, four-team groups. Each team will play each opponent in their group twice, once at home and once away, during three windows which will take place in February 19-27, 2024; November 18-26, 2024; and February 17-25, 2025. The top three teams in each group (12 in total) will qualify for the 2025 FIBA Men's AmeriCup August 23-31, 2025, in Managua, Nicaragua.

The U.S. is 6-0 all time in FIBA AmeriCup Qualifying games, going undefeated in 2020-21. The Americans have won the FIBA Men's AmeriCup seven times, most recently in 2017. The USA won bronze in 2022.
