Demeritte's Ninth-Inning Homer Lifts Wilson, M-Braves to 2-0 Win over Biscuits

PEARL, MS - Bryse Wilson, Corbin Clouse, and Chad Sobotka combined for a five-hit shutout and Travis Demeritte hit a ninth-inning two-run homer in Mississippi's 2-0 win over Montgomery on Thursday night. The win is the first for the M-Braves (13-13, 42-54) against the Biscuits this season and evens the current series at one.

The pitching matchup on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium featured the oldest and youngest players in the Southern League. Both were stellar. M-Braves starter Bryse Wilson recorded his fourth-straight quality start in July and third shutout performance with 7.0 scoreless innings. The 20-years and 211 days old Wilson matched a season-high with nine strikeouts and walked just one. In four July starts, Wilson is 1-0 with a 0.66 ERA with 34 strikeouts and just four walks. He's given up just three runs over 27.1 innings. Wilson leads all of Minor League Baseball with those 34 strikeouts in July.

Biscuits (15-12, 52-45) starter and knuckleballer J.D. Martin tossed 8.0 shutout innings on just three hits and has shutout the M-Braves over two starts and 14 innings this season. The 35 years and 198 days old Martin took a no-decision.

Corbin Clouse (W, 4-1) took over for Wilson in the eighth inning and surrendered a leadoff triple to Jake Cronenworth. The lefty followed the triple with a strikeout of Tommy Milone for the first out. The Biscuits attempted to squeeze home Cronenworth from third but Nathan Lukes failed to make contact and Braves catcher Sal Giardina tagged out Cronenworth for the second out. Clouse struck out Lukes, but he reached on the dropped third strike. Nick Solak followed with a double, placing runners at second and third. Clouse picked up his third strikeout of the inning, fanning Nate Lowe to strand two on base.

Clouse has allowed just one run over his last 18 innings and 14 appearances and just two runs over his last 26 innings and 21 appearances.

The ninth began with a leadoff single from Alejandro Salazar against Montgomery reliever Travis Ott (L, 3-3). Ott retired the next two hitters on a strikeout and pop out. Travis Demeritte then connected on a 1-2 fastball from Ott and hit a laser over the left field wall to break the scoreless tie and give Mississippi 2-0 lead. The homer was Demeritte's 10th on the year, becoming to first M-Braves hitter to reach double-digit long balls.

Chad Sobotka (S, 5) saved his fourth-straight opportunity in the bottom of the ninth inning to complete the shutout. Sobotka has yet to allow a run over seven July appearances and 7.1 innings.

Salazar recorded his third-straight multi-hit game and is 9-for-14 over those three contests.

The M-Braves and Biscuits will play game three of the five-game series on Friday night at Riverwalk Stadium, RHP Kyle Wright (5-7, 4.10) will start for the Braves against RHP Benton Moss (2-3, 4.69) for Montgomery.
