Quad City Steamwheelers News Release
Davenport, Iowa â It seems as if the phone rings every week at the same time, with the same person on the other end of the phone. The af2's Media Service Manager Ron Deuter makes a call to the office of the Quad City Steamwheelers to inform Media Relations Manager Ryan Holtmann that another Steamwheelers player has earned one of the league's weekly honors.
Well, this week was no different as Deuter informed Holtmann that WR/DB Jeff Hewitt had earned the honor of af2 ADT Defensive Player of the Week for his performance last Saturday night vs. the Cincinnati Swarm.
Hewitt, who had taken all of five snaps at the safety position this season, was asked to help fill in for injured DS Matt Forbes late in the first quarter. Forbes was forced to leave the game with what was later diagnosed, by head trainer Craig Wainwright and Dr. Tuvi Mendel, as a Grade 3 Tear of his medial collateral ligament.
With DS Shawn Orr and DS Lee Wiggins back home nursing injuries, head coach Rich Ingold had no other choice than to have Hewitt and WR/DB Tim Dodge share time at the position.
The move paid off for Hewitt. He finished the game with three interceptions, one of which was returned 37 yards for a touchdown, five pass deflections and five tackles. That was just the defensive side of the ball.
Hewitt stayed in the game on the offensive side as well, grabbing five passes for 54 yards, one of those an 11-yard touchdown pass from QB Tony Zimmerman. Hewitt earned the game awards for Ironman of the Game and ADT Defensive Player of the Game for his performance. However, Hewitt did not receive the league award for Ironman of the Week.
"What's a guy got to do to get Ironman of the Week," Hewitt joked around after being informed of winning the defensive award. "I just do whatever it takes for this team to win. I am not big on personal awards because it takes a team effort to do the things that I do.
Hewitt and the âWheelers will be back in action this Saturday night at The MARK of the Quad Cities where they will take on the Cincinnati Swarm to finish out a home-and-home series with the team. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
Good tickets are still available and can be purchased at The MARK box office or through TicketMaster at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 563.326.1111.
