Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE, WI (Jan. 18, 2007) - The Milwaukee Wave came within six minutes of just the fourth shutout in their 23-year history on Friday in Baltimore. Despite missing out on the milestone, the Wave (7-8) got the victory 7-2 over the Blast at 1st Mariner Arena.
Two December games between these teams were high-scoring affairs, but Friday belonged to defense. Both first-half goals by the Wave resulted from set pieces. The first, on a restart, was engineered by the Dusosky twins, Troy setting up Todd midway through the first quarter.
In the second period, Greg Howes faked the corner kick restart, then put himself in front and poked in a rebound for his 14th 2-point goal of the year. Howes remains second in the MISL Puma Points standings with 47; Todd Dusosky assisted on that goal and now has 44 points for third place.
Leading 4-0 heading into the third quarter, the Wave got tremendous insurance from an alert Joe Hammes with 8:53 left in the period. The two-time MISL Defensive Player of the Week pounced on an ill-advised pass and hammered in a 3-pointer for a 7-0 lead.
The Blast's Denison Cabral finally broke up Nick Vorberg's shutout bid with 5:59 remaining. Baltimore pulled the keeper in favor of a sixth attacker late in the game but was unable to generate anything.
It has been nearly 12 years since the last Wave shutout, 16-0 over Chicago with Victor Nogueira in goal on Jan. 28, 1995. Tony Pierce recorded the other two, on March 6, 1993 against Denver (14-0) and Jan. 18, 1986 over Chicago (2-0).
Wave Head Coach Keith Tozer missed the game after receiving a red card in the previous contest against Detroit.
The Wave return to action today at 6:05 p.m., hosting the Chicago Storm at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The first 3,500 fans through the door receive a Sprecher Rally Towel, compliments of Sprecher Root Beer. Prior to the main event, the Armada F.C., the Wave's developmental squad, faces the Chicago Tormenta at 3:30 p.m. Wave forward Johnny Torres is the head coach for the Armada. One ticket admits the holder to both games. To purchase, call (414) 224-9283, visit any Ticketmaster outlet, go online at www.ticketmaster.com or come to the U.S. Cellular Arena box office prior to the game.
