Defenders shutout Rock Cats

New Britain, CT - Brett Pill spoiled a record-setting attendance at New Britain Stadium by knocking in two runs - including a solo ome run - to lead the Defenders to a 3-0 shutout over the Rock Cats before a sellout crowd of 8,212 on Saturday night.

The previous high at the stadium was 8,115 last season. Desipte the record-setting corwd, the Defenders extended their lead in the Northern Division as the Rock Cats try to catch their inter-state rivals in the standings.

The first two Defenders' batters made first baseman Whit Robbins work for the first two outs of the game. Robbins was able to stab both balls and fire the ball to Cole Devries to retire Brock Bond and Brad Boyer. Pill then smashed a solo home run over the left field wall for a 1-0 Defenders' lead.

The Defenders tacked on two more runs with an RBI single by Tyler LaTorre in the seventh and an RBI double by Pill off of reliever Jose Lugo in the eighth.

DeVries (5-6) limited the Defenders to two runs on six hits in seven innings, but came away with the hard-luck loss. He struck out five.

Jesse English (5-4) picked up the win for the Defenders with six shutout innings. He scattered three hits. Ben Snyder added three scoreless innings in relief to notch his first save of the season.
