Defenders' bats come up big in series finale

The Defenders salvaged a series split with a twelve run scoring output at New Britain on Monday night as they beat the Rock Cats, 12-6.
The Defenders drew first blood in the top of the 1st off of Glen Perkins, but James Garcia was touched up for a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game 1-1. In the 3rd inning, the Defenders sent 10 hitters to the plate, and had five straight two out hits, to bring in four runs, and they never looked back. A Tyler Von Schell triple, and an Aaron Sisk double were the key hits. In the 5th, Derin McMains, walked to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a balk, took third base on a wild pitch, and scored when catcher Jose Morales's throw sailed into left field. This all happened before a ball had been put in play, and made the score 6-1 Defenders.
New Britain would chip into the lead with two runs in the 5th inning and a run in the 6th to decrease the Defenders lead to a 6-4 margin, but the bats stayed strong for Connecticut into the 7th inning with two runs on three hits. It started with a Nate Schierholtz double. Schierholtz would score one of his three runs on a Brian Munhall triple, and Jake Wald would then add on with an RBI single. Wald had three hits and two RBI on the evening. The Rock Cats made it a three run game in the bottom of the 8th with a run, but Adam Harben's struggles to throw strikes led to four runs on only one hit in the 9th inning. When the dust settled, the Defenders took a 12-6 victory on 14 hits. Every Defender either had a hit or knocked in a run.
After the brief road trip, the Defenders will return home for a 4th of July double header with the Portland Sea Dogs as the beginning of a three day, four game series. In game one, righty Devern Hansack will face the Defenders right hander Chris Begg (5-9). Portland's game two starter is still to be determined, while southpaw Geno Espinelli (4-2) will take the ball for Connecticut. The Defenders will host a fireworks show promptly after game two. Game one of the two seven inning games is scheduled for 6:05.
