Charlotte Eagles News Release

Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Lady Eagles hosted the Atlanta Silverbacks Women at Waddell Stadium tonight. Kelly Schmedes led the Lady Eagles offense with two goals, and the Charlotte defense held Altanta scoreless in the 3-0 win.

Charlotte opened the first half with an early goal in the third minute. Tina Murphy made a through pass forward for Christy Rife. Rife sprinted onto the ball and scored with a shot around advancing goalkeeper Melanie Wilson. It was Christy's seventh goal of the season.

US National Team player Kelly Schmedes got the second goal of the match six minutes later. Schmedes scored on a break away up the middle, putting a hard shot under Wilson.

The Atlanta Silverbacks Women had their chance to pull within one in the 25th minute, when Charlotte tripped a player in the box, bringing up a penalty kick. Kerry Gragg stepped up to take the kick, but Lindsey Deason made a great save getting to the low shot at the left post.

"Deason's save was a huge save, because that wasn't a bad PK, she got out there. Then they get a corner kick and she saves one going in the top corner after that. To get a shutout against that team is a great shutout" commented Coach Lee Horton.

Kelly Schmedes scored her second goal of the game in the 48th. Tina Murphy set up the play, passing through to Schmedes on the run. Schmedes poked the ball past Melanie Wilson and slotted the ball into the open net. The goal was Kelly Schmedes' seventh in just four games for her this season.

The Charlotte Lady Eagles will face Atlanta Silverbacks Women once again on July 4th; this time on Atlanta's turf. It will be the start of a three game road trip for Charlotte, playing in Northern Virginia on July 8th and at Hampton Roads on July 9th. The Lady Eagles next home game schedule is pending due to the Charlotte Eagles Open Cup match against CD Chivas USA of Major League Soccer on Wednesday, July 13th at Davidson College - 7:30pm.
