Dazzle's Taylor Joins Sixers' Summer League Team
July 15, 2002 - NBA G League (G League)
Roanoke Dazzle News Release
ROANOKE, Va., July 15, 2002 â Roanoke Dazzle forward Johnny Taylor begins play in the Shaw's Summer Pro League in Boston tonight, one of 13 players on the Philadelphia 76ers' Summer League roster.
The 6-foot-9 forward was selected from the 17 players at Sixers' free-agent summer camp, which ended Sunday at the team's practice facility in Philadelphia. The Sixers will play six games in the annual Shaw's Summer League at UMass-Boston. The league, primarily for NBA rookies and free agent hopefuls, includes 10 NBA teams. Philadelphia opens against the New York Knicks.
Taylor, a 1997 NBA Draft first-round pick by Orlando, played 13 games for the Dazzle in the first National Basketball Development League season, averaging 13.2 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals. He had two double-doubles, including a 30-point, 11-rebound effort on March 4 against North Charleston â a performance in an ESPN2 telecast game that attracted the attention of NBA scouts.
Dazzle Head Coach Kent Davison will spend most of this week in Boston, scouting the Shaw's competition, before heading to Salt Lake City to observe another NBA Summer League, the Rocky Mountain Revue.
Taylor averaged 10 ppg last summer for Portland in the Rocky Mountain Revue, then went to camp with the Trail Blazers before being one of the NBA team's final cuts. He got his first shot with the Sixers in late May at the team's three-day free agent minicamp, and was invited back for a second session.
Taylor, 28, played 54 NBA games over three seasons (1997-98 through â99-2000) with the Magic and Denver Nuggets. Three other NBDL players from the 2001-02 season â Columbus' Tang Hamilton and Nate Johnson, and Sedric Webber of North Charleston -- are on the Sixers' Summer League roster.
Other NBDL players with NBA Summer League opportunities include Fayetteville's Terrell McIntyre (Orlando Magic); Greenville's Billy Thomas (Indiana Pacers) and Thomas Hamilton (Dallas Mavericks), Huntsville's Eric Chenowith (New York Knicks) and Michael Wilks (Milwaukee Bucks); Mobile's Jamario Moon (Los Angeles Lakers) and North Charleston's Nate Green (Miami Heat).
