Dazzle to be Weekend Warriors

July 18, 2003 - NBA G League (G League)
Roanoke Dazzle News Release

ROANOKE, Va., July 16, 2003 – The Roanoke Dazzle will deem itself "Weekend Warriors" in its third season in the National Basketball Development League, with an attractive home schedule that includes 17 weekend dates and five Friday and Saturday back-to-back home games.

Coach Kent Davison's team will open the NBA minor league's season on Sunday, November 30, when the Fayetteville Patriots visit the Roanoke Civic Center for a 4 p.m. tipoff. The Dazzle will then return home for six weekend dates in December, in which the team will face all five other NBDL teams during this stretch.

"NBDL fans have told us they want to see more games on the weekends," NBDL President Phil Evans said. "In response, we will play nearly 80-percent of our games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday."

The 2003-04 Dazzle schedule consists of 46 games, focusing on more weekend dates, more time to help develop player's skills and extending the season by two weeks to accommodate fans' schedules.

"Our research has told us that fans are prone to attend even more games after the first of the year," Evans said. "We are excited we can accommodate our fans' desire to attend NBDL games when it's most convenient for them."

The Dazzle will play 16 of 23 home games after January 1, including five consecutive home games between March 10-20, highlighted by back-to-back games with the Huntsville Flight on Friday and Saturday, March 12 and 13.

Roanoke finishes the regular season with home games on consecutive weekend nights – Friday, April 9 against Fayetteville and the next evening against North Charleston.

The nine Saturday home games will include three 1 p.m. starts in day-night Civic Center basketball/hockey doubleheaders, a successful concept that began in the 2002-03 season. On December 20 (Asheville), February 28 (Huntsville) and March 20 (Columbus), the Dazzle will play afternoon games, prior to the arena's conversion for hockey games those nights.

All Dazzle home night games will have a 7 o'clock tipoff this season. Sunday home games will begin at 4 p.m.

Based on the strong finish in the 2002-03 season, Dazzle Team President Dennis Robarge sees the league-wide changes as a positive.

"The changes that have been made will have a very significant impact in the continued success of the Roanoke Dazzle," Robarge said. "We are poised to have our best year ever."

The 2004 NBDL post season will consist of the top four seeds advancing to a single-elimination tournament format after a regular season champion has been crowned. The top seed at the conclusion of the regular season will host the fourth seed, while the third seed will travel to the arena of the No. 2 seed. The winners of those two games will play for the post-season title at the arena of the highest remaining seed.

Dazzle basketball fans can purchase season ticket packages for as low as $90 by calling the Dazzle at (540) 266-1000. Season packages are discounted from the single-game price ranges of $10, $16 and $30 (with additional reductions for children's seats). The Dazzle has full- and partial-season plans and flex books on sale. An announcement on single-game ticket sales will follow in coming months.
