Roanoke Dazzle News Release
ROANOKE, Va. â The Roanoke Dazzle won their seventh straight game Wednesday night against the Columbus Riverdragons 90-74 at the Roanoke Civic Center. Leading the onslaught was Isiah Victor with a season high 40 points and 15 rebounds.
Shorthanded by Gatorade Call-Ups to the NBA with the loss of Matt Carroll and James Thomas, an injury to Sung-Yoon Bang in the second quarter put the Dazzle (22-10) at even more of a disadvantage.
Scoring only 25 points in the second half, second-place Columbus gave up an eight-point first half lead, as the Dazzle ended the third quarter on a 20-2 run. Behind Cory Alexander's strong play and Isiah Victor's dominant offensive performance, Roanoke outscored the Dragons 30-10 in the third. More infamous for their offense, the Dazzle defense has now kept Columbus (20-11) under 40% from the field for the fourth straight match up, allowing the Riverdragons to make only 36.8% of their shots.
"Some hearts came out of these guys," said Head Coach Kent Davison. "That was probably the best 24 minutes of defense we've played all season. To outscore them 30-10 in the third, set the tempo for the rest of the game."
The Riverdragons' strong first half play put five players in double-digit scoring. Reed Rawlings and Scott Merritt's 12 points led the way for Columbus, while Jeff Myers, Adam Harrington, and Leroy Hurd all contributed 10 points a piece.
The Dazzle had two players with double-doubles, Isiah Victor with 40 points and 15 rebounds, while Cory Alexander had 13 points and 10 assists. Seth Doliboa stepped up with a season-high 14 points off the bench, while Kevin Owens pulled down 13 rebounds. Victor's 40 points marked the second time in two weeks a Dazzle player has scored 40 points or more (Matt Carroll scored 43 on February 9, 2005).
"The big thing for him," said Davison, "he's a tough guy to guard because he can shoot from the perimeter and he can drive right by you. And when he's back on defense there's not a better forward in the league."
Roanoke goes on the road to play Huntsville Saturday, February 25 at the Von Braun Center at 7:00 p.m. For more information log on to www.nbdl.com or visit www.roanokedazzle.com.
