Dayton Gems News Release

DAYTON, OH - Heading into Sunday, the Dayton Gems had lost six straight games to Fort Wayne. Their last win against the Komets came on Dec. 26.

That streak came to an end in a big way on Sunday. The Gems defeated the Komets 8-0.

The eight goal win is the largest margin of victory of the season for Dayton. The previous best for the Gems had been four goals.

With the win came a lot of big games for Dayton's player.

Jeff Jakaitis recorded his first shutout since Dec. 17, and just his second shutout of the season. He recorded 37 saves in the effort.

Chris Lipsett also had a big game with a hat trick and four points on the evening.

Meanwhile, teammate Mike Vaskivuo just missed out on a hat trick by recording two goals.

Dayton didn't waste any time getting started against the Komets. Brandon Naurato lead the game off with a powerplay goal 6:46 into the matchup.

Chris Lipsett added a goal midway through the period and Mike Vaskivuo scored the final goal of the period with less than a minute remaining to give the Gems a 3-0 lead.

The Gems then doubled their lead in the second period by recording three more goals. Damian Surma started the period off with a powerplay goal before Lipsett took over for the Gems.

At the 11:46 mark, Lipsett scored his second goal of the game. He then recorded his hat trick with a long range slapshot to give Dayton a 6-0 lead.

Dayton scored its last two goals in the final period of the game thanks to Vaskivuo and Tim Hartung. Vaskivuo recorded a shorthanded goal while Hartung contributed with a powerplay goal.

Dayton will begin a three game road trip on Tuesday with a game in Missouri. The Gems game against the Mavs is set to begin at 8:05 p.m.

The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
