Dayton Gems December In Review

January 8, 2010 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Dayton Gems News Release

The Dayton Gems are the youngest team in the International Hockey League along with being the newest franchise. Despite a record in December of just under 500, the team is looking forward to an upswing as they head for the 2nd half of the season. With only one more back to back road trip for the rest of the season, Coach Marks is optimistic as the Gems start this very important climb up the ladder and into the hunt.

Ryan Mior is still on loan to the Rochester Americans. Ryan Mior was called up to the Rochester Americans and played December 2nd through December 6th and again December 22nd and is continuing until their goalies recuperate. In December with the Americans Ryan played 6 games with a record of 3/3/0. His Goals Against Average is 2.62 and save percentage is 92.4%. Since his return to Rochester in late December, he has played 4 games in a row. The team is proud to have Ryan called up but can't wait for him to be back on the home ice at Hara.

Rookies are the heart of the Gems. Dayton is proud that they have 6 players in the top 20 rookie scorers of the IHL. Jon Ornelas, Mike Vaskivuo, Sam Bloom, Corey Couturier, Tim Hartung (all in the top 12) and Mike Mullen - who has been on IR the entire month of December.

Defensemen are the backbone of the Gems. Dayton has 3 of their Defensive players in the top 15: Phil Youngclaus, Joe Van Culin and Captain Greg Labenski. Joe is tied for 1st in goals. Phil is 3rd in assists and for 2nd in powerplay goals. While Nathan Oke is tied for 1st in short handed assists.

The team has the best record for on the road powerplays and leads the league in 2nd period goals.

With December in the rear view mirror - and the chance to make some major moves with the league standings so close - keep an eye out for the upstart Gems under the guidance of Coach Marks to take their place as the NEW KIDS on the block.
