Dayton Gems Beat Fort Wayne Komets To Snap Losing Streak 6-4

After a courageous effort from both sides at tonight's game, it was the Dayton Gems that came out on top, snapping their losing streak with their victory over the Fort Wayne Komets at theAllen County War Memorial.

Dayton nabbed the game's first goal when Dan Lapointe converted a pass at the side of the net from Matt Auffrey at 11:59. Fort Wayne would pull even on the power play to end the first period.

In the second period, Dayton regained a one-goal advantage when John Snowden scored onanother power play advantage thistime from Corey Couturier and Tim Hartung. Fort Wayne would battle back and tie the contestduring asee-sawfirst 40 minutes of hockey.

By the final period, the Gems snapped a 2-2 tie with two goals 16 seconds apart beginning withJonathan Ornelas from Sam Bloom and Mike Vaskivuo at 3:40 and following up with John Snowden from Corey Couturier and Tim Hartung at 3:56.Daytonpushed it to5-2 when Matt Auffrey scored as he finished off a great rush up the ice by Danny Lapointe. Fort Wayne, however, countered in the final five minuteswith two goals 89 seconds apart to close the gap to 5-4.In the end,two key face-off wins by the Gems and an empty net goal by Mike Vaskivuo locked the game up for the Gems.

It was the first of a home and home series between the two teams that will continue tomorrow (Wednesday) night at Hara Arena at 7 pm. The Gems are one point back of the fourth and final playoff spot in the IHL Standings and a win on Wednesday could move them into third place.
