Quad City Mallards News Release
Flint, Mich. (December 30, 2009) - Patrick Levesque scored the tying goal with just over 38 seconds left in regulation and then joined Juris Stals in converting penalty shots as the Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, Wednesday night defeated the host Flint Generals 4-3 in a shootout.
Levesque and Stals buried both Quad City chances in the shootout while Kyle Jones (29 saves in regulation and overtime) stopped the two Flint penalty shots he faced.
Overtime and, as it proved, the shootout were only made necessary by Levesque's heroics in the final minute of regulation. The Mallards had pulled Jones for an extra attacker when Levesque, unchecked on the doorstep, scored the dramatic equalizer.
Two second period goals had propelled Flint into a 3-2 lead. The Generals' John Ronan- on the power play- and Jamie Schaafsma scored in the second to turn a one goal deficit into a one goal advantage. Ronan charged into the goalmouth to tie the score at two at 8:37. Schaafsma put Flint on top by finishing off a 2-on-1 with four minutes left in the period.
The Mallards bounced back to take a 2-1 lead with a pair of first period power play goals after Flint's Rick Smith pounced on a rebound to open the scoring at 3:23 of the first. Chris Lipsett's tip-in tied the game at 11:37; Stals ripped home the go-ahead goal from the right wing circle with just 1:05 left in the period.
The Mallards return home tomorrow night- New Year's Eve- for a special early face off at 6:05 p.m. against the Muskegon Lumberjacks. As the Mallards' New Year's Eve game will start just after midnight London time, the Mallards will ring in the New Year in British style tomorrow evening. While the evening will carry that English flavor as the Flock puts on the Quad Cities' only British New Years' celebration, one element of tomorrow night's festivities will remain all-American as the team will provide free Mallards baseball caps to the first 1,000 fans through the doors.
Tickets for tomorrow night's game and all remaining regular season Mallards home games are available at the i wireless Center box office, Ticketmaster outlets and www.ticketmaster.com or through Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free at 1-800-745-3000. The box office is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and on game days from 10:00 a.m. through the end of the second period.
