DAYTON, Ohio - The Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, fell to the the Dayton Gems 6-2 Saturday night after the Gems scored back-to-back goals late in the second period to grab a lead they would not relinquish and put the game away with three more goals late in the third period.

The Gems forged in front for the first time while on the power play when Mike Vaskivuo's tip in snapped a 1-1 deadlock at 17:19 of the second period. Just over a minute later Jonathan Ornelas buried Pierce Norton's centering pass to stretch the lead to two goals.

At 5:13 of the third period Tyler Kindle scored the Mallards' second power play goal and cut the gap to 3-2 with a long range wrister, however the Gems would then rebound to push the game beyond the Mallards' reach. Preston Briggs made it 4-2 Dayton with a shot through traffic at 12:22 of the third. Just 56 seconds later Tim Hartung's solo rush widened the margin to three. Justin McCutcheon's empty net goal capped off the Gems' win with 1:15 remaining.

The two teams had swapped first period power play goals. Chris Lipsett's one timer from the high slot gave the Mallards a 1-0 lead at 10:19. The Gems responded with Greg Labenski's blue line blast with just over a minute left in the first.
