Davis' Five Hits Lead Shuckers

BILOXI, MS - The Biloxi Shuckers scored a season-high 13 runs on a season-high 20 hits, including five from Johnny Davis, to win their fifth straight game 13-0 over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. The Shuckers hit three home runs en route to their most lopsided win of the year. All nine batters in the lineup had at least one hit on the night while six recorded a multi-hit game.

The 20 hits tied a franchise mark set May 13, 2015, against the Jackson Generals and the 13 runs are the second-most in club history, one shy of the 14 scored on that same date in 2015.

The first of the three homers came right away, as Davis led off the bottom of the first with his fourth homer of the year. The Shuckers outfielder went 5-for-6 with three runs batted in while stealing his league-leading 32nd and 33rd bases of the season in a career night. It marked the second five-hit game in Shuckers history, and first, since former Shucker and Yankees first baseman Garrett Cooper completed the feat in September of 2015.

After adding additional runs in the first and second, the Shuckers handed starter Freddy Peralta a 3-0 lead. The righty pitched effectively, striking out five batters and allowing only one hit, but he walked five and only completed four innings before departing due to an inflated pitch count.

René García gave the Shuckers some padding with a two-run home run in the fourth off Joe Gunkel (L, 3-7) to make the score 5-0. Nick Ramirez (W, 5-4) pitched three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for the Shuckers.

Biloxi broke the game open in the eighth, batting around and scoring five runs to take a 10-0 lead. Clint Coulter hit a three-run homer to center, his team-leading 13th of the season. Davis added an RBI single and Angel Ortega's second hit of the inning produced the fifth run of the frame.

The Shuckers had four straight hits to start the bottom of the eighth inning which included an RBI double from Javier Betancourt and a two-run double by Garcia.

Davis led the offense, but Coulter finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a homer, and four RBI. Betancourt was 3-for-5 and scored three runs. Ortega's 2-for-5 performance upped his hitting streak to seven games while Troy Stokes Jr. pushed his streak to five with a 2-for-5 night.

The Shuckers will look for their second five-game sweep of Jacksonville on Thursday night with RHP Corbin Burnes on the mound for Biloxi, against RHP Chris Mazza for the Shrimp.
