March 21, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Bloomington Thunder News Release
BLOOMINGTON, Illinois - Jeremy Davies (Northeastern University) pulled away this weekend as the top scoring defenseman in the United States Hockey League, earning CCM Defenseman of the Week in the league. The second year blue liner put together five assists over the weekend and picked up his second honor of the season. Davies helped the Thunder to two wins over the weekend as they have widened the gap to the Clark Cup Playoffs.
Davies, 19, earned his second honor becoming the sixth award for the Thunder this season. Goaltenders Logan Halladay (Merrimack College), Hayden Lavigne (University of Michigan), and Logan Lambdin (Michigan State University) have also earned wins for the Thunder as players of the week this season. Lavigne is the other player with the Thunder to win the honor twice this year.
"It's a great honor. There are a lot of great defensemen in this league and I have to give a lot of credit to my teammates as well," said Davies who was quick to recognize his peers for their work on the ice. "We have been playing really well as a team, you know I've just been feeding off them and getting lucky here and there."
The Week 26 winner has had five helpers over the weekend including the two goals of the Thunder's 3-2 shootout win over the Lincoln Stars. On the back end of the ice, the Thunder defenseman has helped his club limit scoring of their opponents to 1.5 goals per game over their recent ten game stretch.
"We are going for the playoffs here. Getting those two wins this weekend was huge for us. We are pretty close to that, but we still need to keep working hard to get there."
Davies was also ready to thank his men between the pipes as well as his team for their work during the Thunder's winning stretch. "Gotta give credit to our goalies, they have been playing awesome. They have helped us win a majority of our games, shutting the door back there. Obviously, guys have been buying in, blocking shots, which is huge if we want to be a big playoff caliber team."
The Montreal, QC native has been the top point producers from the blue line in the USHL this season. In the hunt for the USHL Defensive scoring crown, Davies leads the pack with 43 points (13g, 30a) and has the most goals scored by a defenseman this season. Cedar Rapids' Jack Ahcan (St. Cloud State University) and Tri-City's Mattias Goransson (University of Massachusetts-Lowell) trail Davies for the crown by four and six points. Davies also is third on the Thunder in points behind Lambdin and Tarek Baker (University of Wisconsin) with 44 (26g, 18a) and 46 (19g, 27a) respectively.
The dominance is nothing new for the Huskies' prospect. Since the calendar changed to 2016, Davies has 31 points (8g, 23a) of his points over 28 games. He and the Thunder have also gone 9-1-0-0 in their last ten games and are the hottest team in the USHL to date.
When asked about what has helped the Thunder get to this point both this season and as of late, Davies responded, "The coaching staff has been great for us. We prepare for every game with video and the preparation has been huge for us every game. The dedication from the coaching staff and the guys preparing helps us win a lot."
Before his time in the USHL, Davies was a member of the Lac Saint Louis Lions of the Quebec Midget AAA (QMAAA). Over his three year career with the Lions, Davies logged over 135 games in the regular and post season. Through those games, Jeremy had 98 points and earned himself recognition as a Second Team All-Star selection during his final season of 2013-14.
The Waterloo Black Hawks drafted Davies in the 13th round of the Phase II process and began the season with the Hawks. After playing in 11 games with Waterloo, Davies was swapped for Ethan Spaxman (Merrimack College) and earned his keep from there. He was the top scoring defenseman for the Thunder at the end of the 2014-15 season and fifth on the team in points with 24 (4g, 20a).
Bloomington has pulled nine points ahead of the Youngstown Phantoms with just five games remaining in the season. Davies and his team have the opportunity to clinch with either a win or a Phantoms loss in regulation.
