Winston-Salem Dash News Release
KINSTON, NC - Jared Mitchell hit his first professional home run to power the Winston-Salem Dash to its first win of the season, a 3-2 victory over the Kinston Indians. The game was called in the bottom of the eighth inning due to heavy rain and lightening.
Winston-Salem (1-1) got to Kinston starter T.J. McFarland early to take the lead. Jose Martinez singled and Mitchell lined the first pitch he saw off the right field scoreboard for a two-run home run.
The K-Tribe (1-1) halved its deficit in the bottom of the third against Dash starter Andre Rienzo, who was making his Advanced-A debut. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, Rienzo walked Bo Greenwell, who stole second base. Casey Frawley followed with a hard ground ball up the middle that bounced off Daniel Wagner's glove but stayed in the infield. Greenwell never broke stride and scored from second base to cut Winston's lead to one run.
The Dash got that run back in the top of the fifth against McFarland (0-1). With two outs, Wagner reached on a fielding error by third baseman Adam Abraham and advanced to second when a pickoff throw got away from first baseman Chase Burnette. Martinez drove him in with a single to right, making it 3-1 Winston-Salem.
Rienzo departed after four innings and was replaced by Taylor Thompson, who pitched a pair of scoreless frames.
The Indians got a run closer in the seventh, but missed an opportunity to tie or take the lead after loading the bases with no outs. Orlando Santos walked the first two batters he faced to start the inning. Greenwell's sacrifice bunt was mishandled by third baseman Austin Yount and the error loaded the bases. After striking out Frawley, Santos allowed an RBI single to Burnette to get Kinston back within one run and re-load the bases. Santos then struck out Abner Abreu and Adam Abraham consecutively to end the inning and keep Winston in the lead.
After the Dash stranded two baserunners in the top of the eighth, Kinston put a man on with one out in the bottom of the inning. A light rain turned heavier as a storm system moved into the area, prompting the umpiring crew to delay the game. It was the second straight night the teams were affected by late inning rain, as the teams were delayed 27 minutes on Friday night in the top of the ninth inning. After waiting exactly one hour for the rain to subside, the umpires called the game, giving Winston-Salem its first win of the season.
Thompson (1-0) picked up the win while McFarland took the loss. Santos Rodriguez was credited for the save by retiring one batter in the eighth inning.
Martinez went 4 for 4 on the night, boosting his batting average to .667 through two games.
Winston looks to capture the rubber game of the series on Sunday afternoon when LHP Hector Santiago makes his second career start against RHP Clayton Cook. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. with the game broadcast beginning at 1:15 on www.wsdash.com.
The Dash begins its home slate at BB&T Ballpark on Friday, April 15 at 7 p.m. against the Indians. Fans may purchase tickets for every Dash game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visiting www.wsdash.com.
