Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (NOVEMBER 4, 2011) - The Winston-Salem Dash are proud to announce that head groundskeeper Doug Tanis has been selected Minor League Baseball Sports Turf Manager of the Year in the Single-A Classification. Tanis was chosen from a field of candidates representing each of the five Single-A Minor Leagues and their 60 individual member teams.
Two months ago, Tanis was named the Carolina League's Sports Turf Manager of the Year for the first time, making him eligible for this classification-wide honor. The award was based on Carolina League coaching staff evaluations of all the league's playing surfaces. BB&T Ballpark graded highly for its playing surface and a variety of other categories.
"This is an unbelievable honor for my staff and the entire Dash organization," Tanis said. "I want to especially thank the ownership and management of the Dash. Winning this award would not have been possible without their unwavering support during our first two seasons at beautiful BB&T Ballpark.
"Additionally, to be recognized among so many deserving candidates is truly humbling. I know firsthand the terrific job my colleagues do for their respective organizations. I cannot emphasize enough how special this honor is because of the great work they do with their fields."
Tanis will be presented with his award at the Annual Baseball Winter Meetings in Dallas, Texas on December 5.
Tanis has spent the past five seasons as Winston-Salem's head groundskeeper. He joined the then-Warthogs in January of 2007 after working for the Lakewood BlueClaws of the South Atlantic League. Prior to working in baseball, Tanis spent four years in the Marine Corps and served his country in the Iraq War. He holds an Associate's degree in turf management and is a native of Pequannock, New Jersey.
