Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release

HIDALGO, TX: February 17, 2005 – The Rio Grande Valley Dorados of arenafootball2 are pleased to announce another player assigned to the squad by the af2, as they welcome fullback/linebacker Darvell Bivens to the 2005 roster.

"Darvell will be a great fit to our squad," said Dorados Head Coach Kevin Guy. "I am sure he has something to prove this season and is probably hungry to get back after having a great start of the season prematurely ended by an injury."

Bivens comes to the Dorados after spending last season with the Fayetteville, North Carolina based Cape Fear Wildcats. He was limited to four games for the 12-4 Wildcats after suffering a season-ending injury, but he was impressive in the games he appeared in. Despite appearing in just four games, Bivens still finished the season ranking second on the Wildcats squad in rushing with 65 yards off of 13 carries (5 yards per carry avg.) and registered three touchdowns. Bivens also contributed on defense with 11 tackles (4 solo) and a sack, quarterback hurry, and fumble recovery. The 25 year-old earned Week 5 Ironman of the Game honors for the Wildcats in their 60-21 win over Columbus with 9 carries for 52 yards and 2 touchdowns on offense and 1.5 tackles on defense.

The 5'11" 263 pound Lancaster, California native was ranked as the third best fullback in the 2001 NFL Draft class by known draft analyst Mel Kiper after finishing up his college career at Northwestern State University (Natchitoches, Louisiana). Bivens ended up going undrafted, but did go to camp with the New York Giants. At Northwestern St., Bivens was used mostly as a blocking back with the Demons program from 1996 - 2000. Bivens, who is still completing a Masters Degree in Adult Education at NSU, had six carries for 25 yards and a touchdown as a freshman. He suffered a season-ending injury in 1996, resulting in a redshirt season in 1997. Bivens bounced back in 1998 and appeared in 7 games, registering 112 yards off 11 caries (10.2 yards per carry), including a 49-yard touchdown run. He missed the 1999 season and finalized his college career in 2000 with 62 rushing yards off of 10 carries (6.2 average per carry) and 3 receptions for 46 yards in 6 games. Prior to NSU, Bivens prepped at Antelope Valley Christian (Lancaster, CA) and was ranked as one of the top ten linebackers in the state by Blue Chip Magazine.

Biven's addition to the Dorados roster gives them 20 members announced to the 2005 squad, joining Brian Baker (QB), John Bradley (OL/DL), J.R. Davies (QB), Sterling Finney (WR/DB), Marquis Floyd (WR/DB), Wil Goff (OL/DL), Will Goodloe (OL/DL), Josh Kellett (QB), Marquis Landrom (WR/DB), Joseph Lemberg (OS), Moses Lewis (TBD), Travis McAlpine (WR/DB), Kenny McClain (OL/DL), Ben McCombs (DE, FB/LB), David Morrill (FB/LB), Antoine Murphy (OL/DL), Pierre Thomas (WR/DB) and Josh Tubbs (OL/DL). Media members seeking an interview with Bivens or Coach Guy are encouraged to contact Chris Due with the Dorados at 956-227-4940.
