DANVILLE, VA - In a game that featured two of the top pitchers in the Appalachian League, Jamie Richmond and the Danville Braves came out on top.
Danville used a four-run eighth-inning, highlighted by a three-run Jon-Mark Owings home run, to beat the Kingsport Mets 5-1 Wednesday afternoon at American Legion Post 325 Field at Dan Daniel Memorial Park.
Richmond, tied with Mets starter Greg Mullens for the Appalachian League lead in wins, pitched six-innings, giving up just one run on five hits and struck out five.
Mullens was equally good, going five-innings while giving up one run on five hits and struck out five.
Kingsport was able to get to Richmond right off the bat in the first-inning when D.J. Wabick doubled home Emmanuel Garcia to make it 1-0 Mets.
Mullens, who was perfect through 3 1/3, finally got into some trouble in the sixth when he gave up a double to Jose Santos and a RBI single to Concepcion Rodriguez to tie the game at one.
Neither team had any scoring chances until the bottom of the eighth, when Braves shortstop Paul Bennett walked with one out. Larry Williams followed with a double off of losing pitcher Edgar Ramirez (2-2), to give the Braves a 2-1 advantage.
Danville wasn't finished, as they put two more runners on for Owings who blasted a Dusty Childress pitch over the leftfield wall for his seventh homer of the season, putting the Braves up by the final margin of 5-1.
Donovan Hendricks (1-0) was the winner for Danville striking out three in 1 2/3 perfect innings.
The win was Danville's fourth straight and improves the first place Braves to 32-23 on the year.
Kingsport drops their second straight after winning nine in a row, to go 30-23.
The Braves will now go for the three-game sweep of the Mets tomorrow evening at Dan Daniel Memorial Park. Game time is 7:00 PM for the Thirsty Thursday matchup.
