Danville Stands-Up to the Defending Champs, but Still Fall Short

Published on November 5, 2011 under Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL) News Release

With the defending league champion, Akwesasne Warriors, coming to town the Danville Dashers knew they would have their hands full. Akwesasne didn't disappoint. The result was an 11-7 barn-burner. Plenty of shots, plenty of goals, and a couple of good scraps made for an exciting evening.

The first period saw an offensive battle. Eight pucks found the back of the the net as the first act ended 5-3 in favor of Akwesasne. A hat-trick from Pierre Dagenais, team captain of Akwesasne, would have caught the attention of any scout. Additional goals from Addison Pelkey and Nicholas Corbeil gave the Warriors their 5 goal first period total. However, strikes from Ray Tremblay and brothers Kyle and Shane Heffernan kept the deficit manageable for the Dashers. Despite the disadvantage on the scoreboard, the Dashers led in shots with a 22 to 20 difference before the clock hit zeroes. Frame two on the night saw less action...on the scoreboard anyway. However, the pucks that found net were crucial as shots from Jose Vazquez and Shane Heffernan, his second of the evening and the first goal on the man-advantage in franchise history, brought the score even. The penalty section of the scoresheet got a majority of the attention as a fight between Paul Shants of Akwesasne and Dan Morini brought the home faithful to their feet. Preceding the bought was a couple of unsportsmanlike conducts on the part of a pair of number seventeens as Dasher, Shane Ferguson, and Warrior, Nicholas Corbeil, had a slight misunderstanding at center-ice. Other than the first powerplay goal, the second period included two more firsts for the new Danville franchise. It was the first time the Dashers had gone an entire period without allowing a goal and it was also the first twenty minute set in which Danville outscored their opponent. Period three on the night was one to forget for the Dashers. Six goals allowed buried any chance Danville might have had at victory. Dagenias added two more goals to his credit as he finished the evening with an amazing five goals and a pair of assists. Goals from Nicolas Corbeil, Daniel Sauve (shorthanded), Alain Quenneville and Addison Pelkey added to the embarrassment of the Danville goaltender. The last two goals on the night from Dashers included lighted lamps for Justin Barr and Chris Affinati. When the final buzzer sounded the lights on the scoreboard read a 11-7 victory for the boys from Akwesasne and their goaltender Jacob Lazore, as he recorded 47 saves on the evening. This brings the Warriors' record to 3-1-0 on the season, a tie for second in the standings pending the official result of the 1000 Islands-Vermont Wild showdown. Danville drops to 0-3-0 on the season. Bright spots for the Dashers inlcuded outshooting their opponents 54-42 and going 2 for 5 on the powerplay while holding the Warriors to 0 for 3 on the man-advantage. The same two teams will take to the ice tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 pm. Akwesasne will be looking for the weekend sweep, while Danville is will be in search of their first victory of the season.
